The Atlanta Science Fiction Society

A New Science Fiction Club in Atlanta

This is our logo - the ASFS Peach

Back in early 1998, Randy Cleary (aka R.B. Cleary, GaFilk's artiste in residence) told me of a new science fiction organization just formed in Atlanta in which he was involved, called the Atlanta Science Fiction Society. It's comprised of a group of science fiction fans in the area who really didn't have another club to go to because, as far as I can tell, there aren't many, if any at all, science fiction clubs in Atlanta. After going to the group's second meeting, I joined.

Presently, the group has meetings once a month on the second Saturday over at the Sandy Springs branch of the Atlanta Library system. It's located off Roswell Road about a mile north of the Roswell Road exit off I-285.

Besides having the monthly meetings, we participate in events in the Atlanta community. For instance, in 1998 a group of us attended a private screening of "Babylon 5 - River of Souls" at the Buckhead Backlot Theatre (you know, the one with the comfortable chairs and the full-blown dinner service). The screening was held one week before the TV premiere of the movie.

Several of us went to a benefit premiere screening of "Lost in Space" where we sort of got to see Mimi Rodgers, Matt LeBlanc and other cast members. The problem with "seeing" them is that we were in the last row of the cinema, and the guests were something like 150-200 feet away. so they were VERY small.

Several of our members work on or are in charge various tracks at the annual Dragon*Con here in Atlanta (which boasts of being the world's largest science fiction convention, having an attendance in 1998 of ~20000 people). ASFS had its September meeting at the convention, as a matter of fact.

Besides the usual science-fictiony activities we do, we get together and have fun as well. On July 4, 1999, we went to the house of two members and had a combination pot luck dinner and fireworks display. We also had a holiday party (reminding people here, of course, that not everyone celebrates Xmas) where, again, we had a pot luck meal.

The people who are members are good people, and we don't just meet for the fun of it. We enjoy each other's company as well. It's a good group of people, and I hope you'll consider joining us. Membership fees are $12.00 a year. We put out a newsletter monthly which you can pick up at meetings.

What I hope for this page is that I'll be able to put up the monthly newsletter (provided it comes to me in a readible format), along with a page of upcoming activities, so stay tuned here, OK?

This will take you back to my main page.

This will take you to the official ASFS page.

This will take you to the official page of the organization I started, GaFiA (aka Georgia Filkers Anonymous).

Click here and go to the new ASFS official site. It may not be working yet, but this will be the official URL for the site once it's up.

Since I put this page up, people have visited this site. Thank you.
