OH--Cartoon Books has announced that it is ending its
eighteen month relationship with Image Comics. Cartoon
Books founder, Jeff Smith, said that the primary reason
for this move is to once again take control of all
aspects of BONE's destiny. 
"We went to Image Comics when the future of the distribution system was quite uncertain," says Smith. "Since the distribution system has consolidated just about as far as it possibly can, Cartoon Books' original reasons for moving to Image have evaporated. Looking forward, we realized that it made the most amount of sense for us to once again consolidate all of the BONE comic book projects at Cartoon Books. By taking absolute control over the BONE comic book, we can once again have all of our diverse products together under one single banner. The time is right for BONE to rejoin our tremendously successful Cartoon Books BONE compilations, which are perennial best sellers and always in the Diamond Star System Top 10," says Smith.
"The Cartoon Books/Image relationship has been mutually beneficial," says Vijaya Iyer, Cartoon Books' president. "BONE, which is consistently a top 100 title, is now available in more comic book stores across the country, thanks to Image, and BONE clearly helped Image diversify their product line."
Image Comics Executive Director, Larry Marder agrees, "When Jeff and Vijaya first approached Image Comics, the comic book industry was sailing on some stormy seas. The Image partners were glad to see Cartoon Books once again charting their own destiny. BONE's presence forever changed the comic book community's perception of our company. We thank them for that and wish them well." "The switch will take place in two phases," according to Iyer. "It begins with product shipping in March, 1997. BONE #28 will be solicited by Cartoon Books. The BONE encore series will continue with Image Comics until they finish shipping in June 1997 with the reprinting of BONE #20. So remember to look for BONE #28 in the Cartoon Books section and BONE #17 in the Image section."
