Herbs have been used throughout history as healing aids and
preventatives. Did you know that even an aspirin is made from
white willow bark?
Most herbs that we buy have been shipped in and not grown
organically. Many other countries do not have the standards
for the pesticides and their regulations so who knows what we
are being given. Pollution and water issues are enough without
adding pesticides of unknown? So, why not grow your own. BE IN CONTROL AND KNOW WHAT HAS BEEN USED TO GROW IT.
Even the bottled type has a shelf life? Getting back to the
earth, feeling nature and smelling the aroma of healing power?
This is a blessing for us all.
Here are a few words to describe what we need to know about
the usage of herbs.
Decoction: one ounce of herb to one pint of water. Start a
boil and then turn down to simmer about 30 min. Cool completely
and then strain.
Infusion: Straight form. Pour water directly over the herb.
Same portions one ounce to one pint. Let steep for 15 to 30
min.
Macerate: This done with ointments. One cup of oil warmed
making a pouch with the herbs. Soak until they are rich with
scent.
Ointment: Three teaspoons four teaspoons of fat to one
cup of lard/fat. Vegtable oil/fat work well here. Keep in
air tight containers.
Poultice: This is used for rashes and skin problems.
Place the herbs and same amount of water to steep. Strain
the water and make a pouch. Messy at times but effective over
the affected area.
Tincture: Eight ounces of alcohol and four ounces of herb.
Let sit for about two or 3 weeks, sealed bottle and in a dark
place. Drain when ready for use.
