The Origin of Arcanum

Arcanum's backstory has its origins 800 years ago, as chronicled in the Medieval Spawn/Witchblade mini-series. It dates back to Matthew Royale, a human magician. Royale had vision and a plan. He manipulated Lord Cardinale, the possessor of the power of the Darkness at that time, to invade the realm of Faerie. Offering his services and advice to Cardinale in exchange for resources and support, Royale talked the warlord into invading the realm of Faerie, where a treasure-trove of magical artifacts and weapons are stockpiled. Once there, Royale used an artifact to discover the date the apocalypse would begin: OCT 2, 1996.

After Cardinale was decapitated, Royale stole his head, which still has a little of the Darkness' energy. Since the Darkness grants immortality to its host, Royale has been feeding the head small bits of magic over the years and draining off that immortality.
