After the Medieval Spawn/Witchblade series, Royale went into hiding for 800 years, keeping a journal of his every move and discovery and staying alive by leeching off of Cardinale's powers. Over the years, Royale attracted his own following, the Theurgis. The Theurgis were the ones who would copy ancient texts by hand, but they never knew what Royale's motives truly were.

The beginning of the armageddon has started right on time, but there was never a specific date for an ending. Royale quickly found his way to Franklin Blake, the evil avatar of darkness, in the late 20th century. The two formed an alliance, wanting to hurry the end of the world. Royale supplied Blake with his expertise about magic and some migical goodies such as teleportation tattoos and Blake gave Royale a base and the resources to do what he needed to do. Over the years, Blake has gathered 4 other avatars to his cause. They include Sato Yoroitomo, the embodiment of war; Sonja Carlsen, the embodiment of lust and the dark side of love; Hossain Rao, the personification of fire; and Tucker Hawke, the embodiment of the hunt.

The good avatars, who've been working to slow the armageddon are led by Ramat Nassir, the personification of light, and include Marie Isanove, the embodiment of battle; Georgi Milovic, the embodiment of cold; Luis Benitez, the personification of earth; and the newest avatar, Ming Chang, who possesses the powers of life.

Along with the good avatars and the evil avatars, there is one completely neutral avatar. Known only as Baron, he is embodiment of death. Neither good nor evil, he appears during battles when an avatar is about to die in order to take the avatar's powers and guide it back to the source of all magic.

The status quo went on for years - a clash with the other side now and then - until now. Some Theurgis members discovered Royale's true motives and stole his journal to join with the good guys. That put Royale at a disadvantage, but didn't stop him scheming. Franklin Blake was killed and Royale scooped up his power before Baron could come and claim it. This makes Royale supremely dangerous. He's had 800 years to study and prepare to use his powers and he's more powerful then Blake ever was.

Helping out the bad guys are Royale's foot soldiers, the Golems. The Golems are animated iron forms that are piloted by a human soul. Royale gave his men this ultra-strong bodies to pilot. The golems can get beaten up as much as they want, but this way his men stay healthy.
