Originally created back in June of 1995, VirtuaPern was created with the idea of making a larger, faster, more advanced Pern MOO. However, our idealistic goals suffered a setback when VirtuaPern's Archwizard Steve failed to come through with is promise of better equipment. This however did not daunt the rest of VP's staff.

August of 1995, Aeon Miller copyrighted VirtuaPern and we set out newer and more realistic goals. With Anne McCaffrey's generous cooperation and rights to her materials, we seek to make VirtuaPern one of the best sites on the Internet.

January 1, 1996 VirtuaPern Officially opened for the first time with Fort Weyr, Benden Weyr, Fort Hold, Ruatha Hold, Nerat Hold, Benden Hold, Igen Hold, Harper Craft, Wood Craft, Healer Craft, Herder Craft, Weaver Craft, Smith Craft, and Vintner Craft.

May 5, 1996 VirtuaPern's system site was struck by lightning, destroying the motherboard and simm chips. However the hard drive was salvaged.

July, 1996 VirtuaPern gained temporary access to a new site. The wizards began major reconstruction of the database. Due to the new size limits of the new site, major downsizing was necessary.

Sept 1, 1996 VirtuaPern officially reopened with Fort Weyr, Benden Weyr, Ruatha Hold, Benden Hold, Harper Craft, Healer Craft, Vintner Craft, Herder Craft, and Smith Craft.

May 17th, 1997 VirtuaPern was moved from it's Canadian site to one located in Texas with it's own private server and T1 line! New address: vp.txk.com 9999 Smithcraft closes due to the inactivity of the Craftmaster.

October, 1997 VP Staff got wind of rumors that Anne McCaffrey was restricting the usage of the names Benden Weyr and Ruatha Hold. After several letters, we reached an accomodation. Despite the wording of VirtuaPern's original permission letter, for the best interests of a amiable relationship between the author and the game, Benden Weyr was renamed to Bahrain Weyr (though the Weyr location remains at the same IC place as Benden) and Ruatha Hold was transfered over to Fort Hold.

November 15th, 1997 Vintnercraft closes due to inactivity but is replaced by the Weavercraft (as per demands of multiple players.)

March 1998, Construction of a new database for VirtuaPern goes into effect. Votes to move the Eastern half of Pern to the Southern Continent ratified to create the Xanadu region.

May 1998, VirtuaPern registers their own domain at www.virtuapern.com!

October 1998, Yi-Shien assumes ownership of 50% of VirtuaPern. Smithcraft is reopened under the leadership of Craftmaster Ciaran. Part-Time Player Characters (PTPCs) are instituted for the allowance of secondary rider alts.

Theme of VirtuaPern

VirtuaPern exists approximately 700 turns after the Ninth Pass. We're working under the assumption that all the things in the book did happen and from there... the story continues. After the death of Robinton, things took a rather morose twist. The sabotage continued for a multitude of turns, eventually culminating in yet another volcanic eruption that proved to damage Landing far more than any saboteur could have hoped for. With such tragedy hanging over Landing, people gradually drew away from AVIAS and it's knowledge.

Pern unfortunately never reaches the level of technology that the Colonists had originally set up except for some minor advancements in the medical technology, minor electronics and for some over improvements in living conditions at Hold and Weyr.

The Weyrs having fulfilled it's plans to eradicate Thread, fight out the rest of the Pass but with the eventual death of F'lar and the greatly decreasing sizes of dragon clutches, the Weyrs only made a partial attempt to settle in the South at Honshu and Eastern Weyr. Over the next 680 turns the Weyrs diminish as the number of new dragons never exceeded the number of existing dragons, to the point where now in the present only two Weyrs are still open, the rest moving to Fort and Bahrain to make full sized Weyrs.

The Holds spread out, many minor Holds growing to the point where they almost match the size of the old major Holds. Though some still tithe to the last two Weyrs, the majority feel they are a drain on the growing economy. But the Red Star still hovers over the horizon, each turn drawing closer and closer.

Rumors abound that the clutches at the Weyrs are growing in number and Dragonriders once again rise to Search outside the Weyr. Is it possible that the Redstar is returning and that Thread might fall again? Only time will tell...

This is where VirtuaPern begins. Where it goes from here is up to you, the player.

Per request from Fort Weyr, the following Hatching Log from the
Suyinth/Llyrth and Isoldeth/Odynth Clutches

It's simple really. Anyone possessing a telnet client can access VirtuaPern.

connect name password

To connect as a guest only, just use the first connect option.

To create a character, put a Pernish-styled name, a unique password, and your email address

There is also a great resource on the net that provides you with a list of commands that you can try out once you are actually in VirtuaPern. Though some commands change from MOO to MOO, most of the basic commands are the same, this following site should be very helpful to the beginner MOOer.
