Author's Notes
--------------

The Table of Contents of this document is unconventional in that it lacks numbers. They have been omitted because they are, in my opinion, distracting and unnecessary in a document of this nature.

In the walkthrough, I will attempt to walk you through Ultima VI more quickly than anyone has ever walked through Ultima VI before. In doing this, I will leave out several sub-quests. I will not present any information on finding the guild belt, the map pieces, the silver tome, or the clue scrolls. This information will be touched upon in the addenda which follow the walkthrough.

Walkthrough
-----------
-Getting Started-

After you win the opening fight against the gargoyles, talk to Lord British, who will give you your quest, a key, and permission to take anything from his castle. Explore before you leave! You don't need anything except the reagents in your room, the black potion in Nystul's lab, the cheese in the dining room, and Sherry the mouse (who's roaming in the castle somewhere and who will become a member of your party if you talk to her and feed her the cheese), but you can sell almost everything else, so collect it anyway! After you've grabbed every item in sight, use Key B to open the left-hand door in front of the castle entrance, pull the lever, and leave.

-Moonglow-

Now go to an open area (the grassy area to the left of the mint is my favorite spot) and use the Moon Orb two spaces up from and two spaces left of the Avatar. Enter the red moongate that appears here, and you'll teleport to Moonglow, the town of honesty. Walk far, far to the north to find Xiao the mage and buy the Dispel Field spell from her. Use the Moon Orb to teleport back to Moonglow's circle of stones, then go right and you'll find Penumbra's house. Walk through the magical fields and talk to Penumbra until she refers you to Beyvin's cousin Manrel.

Find Manrel near Moonglow's tavern and ask him about Beyvin. He'll give you a key to Beyvin's crypt. Now go to the tavern, search the back wall in the storeroom, and enter the Moonglow catacombs. Go left until you find a ladder, searching the coffins along the way (they're full of items that you can sell at a pretty penny!), explore the coffin down-left from it for a glass sword (which you should hold on to), then descend. Stroll among the crypts until you see one with a pot of flowers and a scroll outside its door. This is Beyvin's crypt. Use Key M to open its door, then enter and search the bones for the Rune of Honesty. Cast Help to go back to Lordy B's throne room.

-Britain-

Stay in Britain for a while. Go to the Conservatory and ask Ariana about the Rune of Compassion. She'll offer to give you the rune if it's all right with her mom. Very well, then. Go to the tavern and ask Anya if you can "borrow" the rune from her daughter. Then return to the Conservatory and get the Rune of Compassion. Sell whatever goodies you found in the catacombs, and buy a powder keg and an empty pot from Efram if you can afford them. If you can't afford them yet, don't worry. You'll be able to buy them later.

-Jhelom-

Plant the Moon Orb two spaces up from and two spaces right of the Avatar, and enter the red moongate to teleport to Jhelom, the town of valor. Go north to the tavern. Here's where you need Sherry. Send the mouse through the hole in the wall to find the Rune of Valor (and Ring 4, which you may find useful). Easy? Well, it gets even easier...

-Yew-

Put the Moon Orb two spaces to the right of the Avatar. Enter the red moongate, and you'll be in Yew, the town of justice. Go in the first house you see and search the chest of drawers. You'll find the Storm Cloak, which is the best defensive item in the game next to the black potion and Ring 4. Take it. It's okay; the cloak belongs to Jaana, who's your friend and doesn't seem to mind your taking it from her... Go directly south into the tavern and search the plant to find the Rune of Justice. While you're here, go west from the mayor's house and buy a Yew log from Big Ben (not the bell, the man, silly!). Cast Help.

-Minoc-

Drop the Moon Orb two spaces down from and two spaces to the right of the Avatar. Go into the red moongate and you'll be near Minoc, the town of sacrifice. Walk south and you'll be at the sawmill, where you can have your Yew log sawed into a smooth board. Pay the nominal fee, then go west, young Avatar, into Minoc proper. Enter the guild hall, where you'll be directed to Julia. Go talk to Julia and have her form panpipes from your board. Catch Gwenno somewhere in town and ask her to play Stones for you. Then go back to the guild hall and play Stones on your panpipes to join the artisans' guild and get the Rune of Sacrifice.

-Trinsic-

Put the Moon Orb two spaces down from the Avatar and step into the resulting red moongate to warp to Trinsic, the town of honor. Find Lord Whitsaber (he's the mayor, don't you know?), and ask him about the rune. Go to the center of town and grab the Rune of Honor from its pedestal.

-Skara Brae-

Place the Moon Orb two spaces down from and two spaces to the left of the Avatar, then take the Red Moongate Express to Skara Brae, the town of spirituality. Talk to Marney in the house east of the pier until she gives you permission to examine her chest (her storage chest, not her bodily chest, naughty!), then open the above-mentioned container to find the Rune of Spirituality. While you're here, take the skiff to the island north of Skara Brae proper and buy Unlock and 40 spidersilks from Horance. Believe it or not, you now have all the spells you need to finish the game!

-New Magincia-

Drop the Moon Orb two spaces to the left of the Avatar and enter the red moongate to reappear in New Magincia, the town of humility. Ask around about the Rune of Humility until you receive it.

-Freeing the Shrines-

All right!!! You've got all the runes. It's shrine-liberatin' time! There's a very easy method for freeing those meditation spots. Just use the Moon Orb to get to them, put the appropriate rune on each dais, then cast Help before those gargoyles kill you. Since the method is the same for each shrine except for the positioning of the Moon Orb, I'll give you the Moon Orb positions and let you handle the rest.
Shrine Position (in relation to Avatar)
Honesty 2 spaces up, 1 space left
Compassion 2 spaces up, 1 space right
Valor 1 space up, 2 spaces right
Justice 1 space down, 2 spaces right
Sacrifice 2 spaces down, 1 space right
Honor 2 spaces down, 1 space left
Spirituality 1 space down, 2 spaces left
Humility 1 space up, 2 spaces left

NOTE: Provided you have enough experience, you can raise your levels at a shrine by talking to the dais. However, this is entirely optional as it is not necessary to the completion of the game. I completed the game without raising anyone's levels, so I'm certain you can do the same.

Hope you enjoyed the game! Pat yourself on the back for your noble... What?! The game's not over yet? You mean you haven't seen an ending? No sort of conclusion? Hmmm... Oh, I suppose you're right. Well, let's do whatever it is that we haven't done yet!

-Sutek's Island-

Buy a skiff, then return to the Shrine of Humility. Sail around until you find an island which has a long pier and a castle protected by rabbits. It's not very far west from the shrine. Fight the rabbits (too bad there's not a Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch in this game!), then toss a powder keg at the door and enter the castle.

Not very big, is it? Try searching for a secret door. I'll be right here... Dispel the left-hand field, then search the wall. Step onto the fire, aim Dispel Field diagonally up to the energy field one space up from the sleep field, which is one step east of the fire field you trod into upon entering this secret room, and step diagonally up and right into the spot where the field which you just dissolved once stood. Pull the first two levers from the left and leave the third (the one on the far right) as it is. Cast Unlock on the far left door, then search the back wall for a secret door (which means that's not really a back wall). Fight the pet Hydra (!), then search the walls in the middle room to find a secret door. Go down the ladder.

Go up to the next four-way, then turn left. Throw all the switches and levers in this room, then leave the room by the same door you entered it, and go straight down until you see a descend ladder. Descend, then search the middle of the north wall to find yet another secret door. Step onto the trap, then turn right at the Pushme Pullyu and follow the path until you find a ladder. Descend.

Now you're underground. Go down until you can turn right, then turn right and follow the path to another descend ladder, which you should climb down. Go down, then turn left, then go up and follow the path, then continue left the next time you're confronted with two paths. You'll find a dead body, on which you'll find the balloon plan. Cast Help.

-Making a Balloon-

You'll be flying as soon as you can gather the items necessary to make a balloon. You should already have an empty pot. If not, see Efram. You can buy rope in Paws. While you're there, have Arbeth spin forty pieces of spidersilk into thread. Go to Charlotte in New Magincia to have your silk thread woven into silk cloth. Return to Paws and see Marissa to have the silk cloth made into a silk bag. Finally, go to Minoc and talk to Michelle to get a huge basket. Use the balloon plan to make a balloon.

-Stonegate-

Fly directly south from Minoc's pier until you find a castle. Enter the castle and take the fishing rod you find in the back. Go outside and use the fishing rod in the water until you catch a fish. Give the fish to the Papa Cyclops outside and he'll give you a key. Then go back inside the castle.

Search the wall in the middle of the front room to find a secret door. Go down the ladder behind it. Pull all the levers you find, then go back upstairs. Go down the right-hand ladder, then go down the next ladder to the left. Walk right as far as you can go, then walk up to the ladder. Descend. Go down the next ladder you see. Turn left, then move the switch in the adjoining room to open the gate. Search the north wall in the next room to find a secret door. Walk through the poison field, then use Key N on the locked door. Cast Dispel Field (after removing the Storm Cloak) and take the Vortex Cube. Cast Help.

-Shrine of Control-

Place the Moon Orb one space up from and one space to the left of the Avatar and step through the red moongate to the Shrine of Control. Move both wall switches down and pull the levers so that they are facing the directions indicated in the following diagram (L stands for left and R stands for right):

R L L R

R L L R R

Walk up until you see a stone statue of Mondain from Ultima I. Talk to him to learn about control. Cast Help.

-Shrine of Passion-

Put the Moon Orb one space up from and one space to the right of the Avatar and enter the red moongate to reach the Shrine of Passion. Walk up until you see a stone statue of Minax from Ultima II. Talk to her to learn about passion. Cast Help.

-Shrine of Diligence-

Position the Moon Orb one space down from the Avatar and walk into the red moongate to warp to the Shrine of Diligence. Go down two doors and left one door, then search the north wall next to the door through which you entered to find a secret door. Enter and ascend the ladder beyond. Go down, then left. Use the black potion (after removing the Storm Cloak) to make the Avatar invisible, then go up until you see a stone statue of Exodus from Ultima III. Talk to it to learn about diligence. Cast Help. And now for something completely different...

-Gargoyle Lands-

Drop the Moon Orb one space down from and one space to the left of the Avatar. Go through the red moongate. You'll reappear right in front of the very altar upon which you were nearly sacrificed at the beginning of the game. Fly east until you find a dungeon entrance, specifically, the entrance to the Dungeon of Hythloth. Find Captain John and use his Gargish Text to learn the Gargish language so that you can speak with gargoyles. Fly north and slightly west until you reach the home of the scholar Valkadesh. Learn about surrender from him.

Return to the gargoyle altar by using the Moon Orb. Fly south until you see monoliths, then fly north and west to the home of Lord Draxinusom. Accept the Amulet of Submission from him.

Fly immediately east to the home of the prophet Naxatilor. Talk to him until he sends you to read the Book of Ritual in the Hall of Knowledge.

Fly south to the building with monoliths in front of it. This is the Hall of Knowledge. Remove your Storm Cloak upon entering, then walk to the left and cast Dispel Field on the energy field. Read the books inside the Librum Chamber, then exit that chamber and walk south to the Vortex Chamber. Get the broken lens, then fly back to Naxatilor.

Naxatilor will send you to the Lensmaker. Fly following the path from Naxatilor's house to the Lensmaker's house. Ask the Lensmaker to repair the Vortex Lens for you. Go back to the altar, then fly north and land in front of the Shrine of Singularity. Remove your Storm Cloak and cast Dispel Field twice, once on the sleep field and once on the energy field. Go north and talk to the Dais of Singularity, which will send you on a sacred quest to find the Codex.

-Getting the Human Lens-

Return to Moonglow via red moongate. Fly northeast to the home of the astronomer/lensmaker Ephemerides. Give him the Gargish Lens, then give him the glass sword you've been holding on to and he'll make a concave copy of the Gargish Lens.

-Returning the Codex-

Now put the Moon Orb one space down from and one space to the right of the Avatar. Strut through the red moongate and you'll be whisked away to the Temple of the Codex. Go directly north of your landing point and you'll eventually be standing right in front of the Codex. Put the Human Lens halfway between the Codex and the blue Flame of Infinity and put the Gargish Lens halfway between the Codex and the orange Flame of Singularity. Then move the eight moonstones into the Vortex Cube and place the Vortex Cube on the Codex. Now pay attention to the ending which follows!
