Why do frogs vocalize

Although unknown to most people, frogs use their ability to produce sounds in many different ways. The croacking you can hear in the early spring probably belongs to a male frog, who is prepared to mate and is either defending his territory or trying to attract females. Sometimes another male comes too close and it's time for an encounter call.
