Doctor Who is a British sci fi program available on a lot of American public television stations (unfortunately the one that carried it in my area for many years dropped it a couple of years ago). "The Doctor" (not"Doctor Who") is a 750 year old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He stole an antiquated type 40 T.A.R.D.I.S. (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) and set out on his own with his granddaughter Susan. She became the first of many "companions" whose principle role is to get into trouble so The Doctor can rescue them. Periodically The Doctor, like all Gallifreyans, reaches a point where his body can no longer survive and so he regenerates; taking on a new appearance and even a new personality. To date there have been 8 Doctors, the latest having made his appearance last year in a TV movie. The series ran on the BBS for 30 years.
