True Tastes

Literature

Pleasure reading tastes

Remember that I'm an historian, a junior faculty member at a state university as well as a parent of young children. The following list is based on past reading behavior and entirely academic at the moment apart from professional reading (which I also enjoy).

Current Recommendations

The fact that I've met all of these authors has had absolutely no effect on my recommendations at all. Please contact me about some land I have in Florida.

Music

Folk

I am a devoted fan of Woodie Guthrie, Christine Lavin, Pete Seeger, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Diane Ziegler, De Danaan, Altan, and assorted others. In other words, I have eclectic taste in folk music.

Jazz

I grew up listening to my oldest brother play in weekly jam sessions in our living room. It was generally the one night when my parents weren't trying to shuffle us younger kids off to bed. I don't have nearly enough time to listen to it now, and when I do I listen to local noncommercial station WMNF.

Playing, etc.

I have played (at some point) viola, piano, harp, and recorder and tortured others with my voice. We currently have a small folk harp and a keyboard. In my copious free time apart from teaching, research, service, spending time with my family, and 'netsurfing, I will find time for this. Now, will someone please ship me a time machine?
