Omega Drift Personal Details

Posting personal details on the internet is not good as it could compromise the identity of a person.

It is probably unwise to de-classify details about my computer history but here goes anyway.

My computer interest started back in 1981 with an Acorn Atom, which served me well until I switched to an Atari 800xl in 1985 (by then it was available for £70). This lasted until the Amstrad 1512 in 1989. This was quickly replaced in 1991 by a Commodore Amiga A500. This lasted until it was replaced in 1995 by a Compaq Presario. The Amstrad was sold, but the Atom, Atari, and Amiga all fell foul of 'de-junking'. The Compaq went to the mother-in-law until it was also 'de-junked'. During this time I had a lot of exposure to the Apple Macintosh, starting from the 128K version back in 1985. The Mac and Amiga were so much better at this stage than DOS and Windows in my opinion. Then in 1999 I got my first Dell, a Dimension XPS T600 Pentium III running Windows 98SE, which several monitors later is still going strong. I managed to acquire an HP Pavilion notebook, but its usefulness was on the brink as its DVD ROM drive had headed south, but it was saved by a USB flash drive - who needs CD's anyway! However I upgraded the Dimension in 2006 to a Dell Dimension 9150 Pentium D (it is Dual Core with 2GB RAM).

The existing hard disk in the 9150 is getting a Western Digital 150GB Raptor as a companion, upgrading the boot disk. The new drive has been successfully formated. Win XP Pro SP2 has been installed on the new hard disk. It has to be a SP2 version of XP otherwise the installation will fail before the drive is detected! It is very important to make sure the correct drivers are used. The re-installed Dell 9150 was giving a Blue Screen Of Death, which was initially believed to be as a result of the upgrading the flash memory of the DVD±RW drive, because the error only manifested itself with operations involving the DVD±RW drive. The error was also subsequently seem with DVD-ROM drive, which suggested that it wasn't the firmware upgrade. It has not happened since a complete re-re-install of the Dell 9150 using the latest system drivers (as opposed to the drivers supplied on the recovery CD). It was working and now it is not. :(

I have configured the secondary drive to boot with DVD±RW and Pinnacle Studio support. The primary drive boots with everything else. As much as posible, I use virtual machines. This makes re-installing the OS a lot less painful!

I also have a Dell Axim x51v which is sweet. It has an XScale processor which has an ARM core, which is where Acorn has finally ended up.
