More Celtic Powers

(For On Hallowed Ground)

Andraste

Lesser Power, "Victory"

AoC: Victory, prowess in battle

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Hare

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir na Og (Mount Victory)

Known Proxies: None

Andraste is the Celtic (specifically Icenian) goddess of victory. She is honoured by warriors on the eve of battles, and when a triumph has been won. Her worship takes place in wooded groves, and those desiring to win in combat release hares in her name. Her realm, Mount Victory, lies in the mountains ringward of the Bloody Field in Tir na Og. Her relations with Nike are cool at best: after all, there's only ever one victor in a battle.

Angus mac Og

Lesser Power, "The Young Son"

AoC: Youth, time

AL: NG

WAL: Any nonevil

Symbol: None known

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir na Og (Bruig na Boinne)

Known Proxies: None

Angus mac Og, also called Aengus or Oengus, is the son of the Daghda and a river goddess called Boann. His foster father was Midir, a courtier of the Seelie Court. He is a caring and clever power, and is noted for his passionate love for a swanmay named Caer Ibormeith. He appears as a handsome young man of typically Celtic appearance.

His realm, Bruig na Boinne, takes the form of a manor house on the shores of Lough Finn, and he allegedly gained it from his mother Boann's husband by using his powers over day and night to work a subtle ruse. As with the Seelie Court, time is unstable there, and acts as he wills it. A cutter going in on one day might spend a week there, and emerge the same day, or leave immediately and find months have passed.

Ceridwen

Lesser Power, "The Initiator"

AoC: Inspiration

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Cauldron

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir na Og (wanders)

Known Proxies: Taliesin (Px/male human/B20/NG)

Often depicted as a night hag, Ceridwen is credited with inspiration for all creative work. She wanders Tir na Og, frequently in magical disguise, giving inspiration to bards, but only if they show some initiative and intelligence of their own. Her skill in magic is renowned, and she is honoured by many illusionists and transmuters.

Epona

Lesser Power, "The Horsemaiden"

AoC: Horses, horse riding, grooms, saddlers, etc, also twins.

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Key of Annwn

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir na Og (Epona's Stable)

Known Proxies: The Nic'Epona (see the Planescape Campaign Setting Monstrous Supplement)

Epona is an important goddess amongst the Celts, who love horses above all other animals. Epona is the guardian of horses and all those associated with them. She protects riders, grooms and all who work with horses, but in exchange requires respect: no Celt may ever eat horse meat, as the Gauls frequently do. Epona appears as a beautiful ageless woman, stripped to the waist and riding a white mare, or sitting on a throne feeding twin foals. Twins, more common among horses than among humans, are another area of interest for Epona. She is on good terms with many other nature powers, and especially with the Greco-Roman gods, as many Romans as well as Celts honour her.

Nehalennia

Intermediate Power, "Sailor's Friend"

AoC: Seafarers

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Unknown

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir fo Thiunn (Colijnsplaat)

Known Proxies: None

A power on good terms with both the Norse and Roman pantheons as well as her own, Nehalennia is a protector power who watches over sailors, and to whom offerings are made for a safe voyage. When a sailor returns home in safety, he offers thanks to her. She is a close ally of Ëarendil the mariner, and is known to visit him at times. However, her power may now be waning, and there are rumours that her seaport realm, Colijnsplaat, may be about to slide into the sea to join Manannan mac Lir.

Nemhain

Demipower, "Frenzy"

AoC: Bloodlust, battle, destruction

AL: CE

WAL: Any evil

Symbol: None

Home P/R: Outlands/Tir na Og (the Bloody Field)

Known Proxies: None

Nemhain is an ally and subordinate of the Morrigan, and is responsible for psychoses of battle. In particular she inspires frezy, bloodlust and panic. She can make a man die of fright, or become a slavering animal that seeks to drink his fellow's blood. Less well known than Morrigu Morrighan, but just as feared, Nemhain's gifts add a new terror to battle on the Bloody Field.

'Sovereignty'

Greater Power, "The Goddess"

AoC: Sovereignty, rulership, purity

AL: LG

WAL: Any non-chaotic, non-evil

Symbol: Crown??

Home P/R: Prime/All Celtic lands

Known Proxies: All loyal Celtic kings, notably Arthur (Pr/male human/Pal 14, B5/NG). Also Merlin (Pr/male tiefling/Druid 14, W(Ill)15/NG), whose father was an incubus.

The Lady Sovereignty is not properly a part of the Celtic pantheon in particular, but more an embodiment of Celtic beliefs about rulership. It is by her decree and in symbolic marriage to her that all kings and queens reign. Rarely referred to by her own name, she is more often named for the country in which her faithful dwell. She is known to strike down unworthy kings if they fail her, and to take a dim view of lazy or ineffective rulers. She has many faces and aspects, and indeed Brigantia is seen as being an ally and possible facet of the Goddess. Sometimes she tests kings by appearing as a hag and daring them to embrace her. If they agree, showing trust, then she reveals herself beautiful once more. She is also known as the Lady of the Lake, as she often manifests in or near bodies of water.
