Dead Powers

Being a tribute to those godly beings who have found themselves in the dead scriptures over the years.

As the Athar never tire of reminding us, the powers are vulnerable. Every now and then a fresh one is killed, or dies, or wastes away, and the Lost look up and ask us why we bother. This page is dedicated to all the powers who have been the victims of such vehement skepticism over the years, and contains a list of powers known to have died, so that they are not forgotten. Each one is listed with their former status and home, which pantheon they belonged to, how they died, and a little on what lost ideas they stood for.

Alalu

Greater Power, "First King in Heaven"

AoC: Unknown

AL: Some Lawful (unknown)

Former Home P/L/R: Mechanus/Alalu's Way (Now Anu's Way)

Pantheon: Babylonian/Hittite

Means of Death: Killed by Anu in a battle for supremacy over heaven

Alalu was the first king of the heavens in Babylonian mythology. He ruled for nine days (although the length of days is debatable in that distant time) before Anu decided it was time to claim his realm, and overthrew Alalu and cast him out, into what was described as the Underworld, but was probably the Astral.

Hun Dun

Greater Power (?), "Chaos"

AoC: Chaos

AL: CN

Former Home Plane: Limbo?

Pantheon: Chinese

Means of death: Accidentally killed by well-meaning fellow-powers

The Chinese pantheon or Celestial Bureaucracy was not always as strict and ordered as it is now. It is told that in ancient times there were three powers: Hu, emperor of the Southern Sea, Shu, emperor of the Northern Sea, and Hun Dun, emperor of the Centre. They had a meeting, at which Hun Dun showed great hospitality to the other emperors. When the conference was over, they sought to repay him. Seeing he had no eyes, nose, or other bodily orifices, they decided to give them to him. For seven days they toiled, boring and drilling, and this is said to be the origin of the standard week used by the Guvners. At the end of that time, Hun Dun died. The order of the planes came into being, and since then the Oriental gods have been organised. Hu and Shu were not heard of again, and are probably minor ministers of the Celestial Bureaucracy. It is thought that this story explains why the planes, even the chaotic ones, are arranged into a ring. The removal of an ancient chaos power created a surplus of order, which organised the planes as they are.

Ogetsu-no-hime

Intermediate Power, "Food Goddess"

AoC: Food, particularly grain

AL: NG

Former Home P/L/R: Elysium/Amoria/Gardens of Plenty

Pantheon: Japanese

Means of Death: Killed by Susanoo for a perceived insult

Ogetsu-no-hime was the grain goddess, who provided food for the people. One day, Susanoo demanded to be fed by her, and she drew food for him out of her nose, mouth and ears. He was grossly insulted by this apparent lack of respect and killed her. It is said that her body then released into the prime the crops which her former worshippers now eat.

Yam

Intermediate Power, "Sea"

AoC: The sea, chaos

AL: CE

Former Home P/L: Abyss/88

Pantheon: Ugaritic/Canaanite

Means of Death: Killed by Baal in a dispute over portfolios

Yam was a fierce monster power that claimed dominion over the rains, which Baal also wished to control. They battled, and Yam was slain and his remains scattered in the Astral Plane, thus demonstrating Baal's superiority. Yam was an ancient ally of Tiamat, and this may have contributed to the confusion concerning Tiamat, Takhisis, Baator and the Abyss, as Yam had an Abyssal realm.
