Maya Powers

(For On Hallowed Ground)

The Maya powers are many and complex, and those depicted here are a partial rather than complete set, but are intended to be representative. Maya culture is superficially similar to that of the Aztecs, but is in many ways very different. I am no anthropologist, and so I cannot explain all this, but the powers presented here may give the reader a flavour of what the Maya are like.

Ahau Kin

Greater Power, "Lord of the Sun Face"

AoC: As the Sun God, the sun, the upper world, light and warmth. As the Jaguar God (see below), darkness, night, the underworld.

AL: LN

WAL: Any

Symbol: A jaguar or the sun's disc.

Home P/R: Mechanus/Disc of Day and Night

Known Proxies: None

Ahau Kin is an unusual power. During the hours of daylight in his realm, he appears as a man with the ears and tail, and possibly other features, of a jaguar, and is radiant and cheerful. When night prevails over his realm, he is dark and sober, and becomes entirely like the jaguar, and it said his spirit roams the underworlds of the Lower Planes.

His realm, in Mechanus, overlooks the abandoned realm of the Torillian power A'tar or Amaunator, who was a former rival. For exactly twelve hours the realm is lit by sunlight, and then for twelve more it is plunged into darkness. On the centre of the cog upon which the realm sits is a temple with 144 steps up to the top.

The Bacabs

Lesser Powers, "Supporters of the Upper Planes"

AoC: The wind, the Upper Planes

AL: N(G)

WAL: Any

Symbol: None

Home P/R: The Outlands/Wander the Great Ring on the good side between Automata and oaXs.

Known Proxies: None

According to the Maya, the Bacabs produce the winds and prevent the Upper Planes falling into the Outlands. They are four in number, and manifest as great titan-like creatures with strong arms. They are generally aloof from mortals, but are proving quite popular with those who travel the Upper Planes. Some say that the Bacabs are four aspects of a god called Pauahtun, but no-one knows for sure.

Chac

Intermediate Power, "Water God"

AoC: Water, rain, lightning, agriculture

AL: NG

WAL: Any

Symbol: An ear of maize

Home P/L/R: Elysium/Eronia/Chac's Valley

Known Proxies: None

Chac is the god of the rains. He is credited with first revealing the life-giving maize to humans, and like many rain gods he his praised for watering the dry earth. He is allied to the Aztec rain god Tlaloc. Chac's Valley in Eronia is not far from Great Mother's Garden, and it is a broad moutain valley where petitioners grow maize and produce maize products such as tortillas, in which they do a healthy trade.

Itzamna

Greater Power, "Lizard House"

AoC: Writing, learning, priesthood

AL: LN

WAL: Any

Symbol: Serpent

Home P/R: Mechanus/House of Teaching

Known Proxies: None

Itzamna is the ruler of the Maya pantheon, and he carries out his role with characteristic skill and pride in his talent. Closely allied with Ahau Kin, whose realm touches his, Itzamna is the provider of intellectual gifts like writing and magic, and is credited with showing the ways of priesthood to the Maya. Also called Zamna, he is a popular patron with the Guvners and other societies that prize learning and mental skill. He is married to Ix Chel, and the two share their realm. He appears in many forms, usually ones associated with knowledge: a king, scribe, venerable elder or serpent. The serpent is Itzamna's animal, and is associated with knowledge by the Maya.

Ix Chel

Greater Power, "Lady of the Rainbow"

AoC: Fertility, childbirth, medicine, weaving and feminism

AL: LG

WAL: Any, especially women

Symbol: Dew drop

Home P/R: Mechanus/Garden of Practicality

Known Proxies: None

A powerful goddess, and a popular patron of women's causes, Ix Chel represents to the Maya many potent feminine ideals: Mother, healer, maker and wise woman. She appears as an old woman with snakes in her hair, and sometimes manifests the claws of a jaguar. She is the wife of Itzamna, and her realm and his are one gear of the Clockwork Universe. Another of her titles is Ix Kanleom, 'The Spider's Web that Catches the Morning Dew'.

She is on good terms with many other powerful female deities, such as Hera of the Greeks and Frey of the Norse. She is an opponent of Ishtar, whom she sees as being a tool for the promotion of masculine values at the expense of women's rights and proper place in society. She is naturally a good friend to Isis, with whom she strongly sympathises.
