More Norse Powers

(For On Hallowed Ground)

Eostre

Lesser Power, "Spring"

AoC: Spring, rebirth

AL: CG

WAL: Any

Symbol: Egg

Home P/L/R: Ysgard/Ysgard/Asgard (Eostre's Pastures)

Known Proxies: None

Eostre is a power with an unusual system of worship: she is massively honoured, but only on one day of the year, in early spring. Her festival cheers up the Norse when the long northern nights get shorter. She grows weaker in the autumn and winter, and thus her revival by faith in the spring is practical as well as symbolic.

Ëarendil

Demipower, "The Mariner"

AoC: Seas and seafarers

AL: CG

WAL: Seafarers, half-elves

Symbol: Morning or evening star

Home P/L/R: Arborea/Ossa/None (wanders), Ysgard/Ysgard/Asgard

Known Proxies: None

Earendil is a popular, if minor, power of sea travel. He appears as a half-elf with a jewelled headband, and is known to be a friend of Thor. He is also regarded on some worlds as having a sun-god aspect, or as being associated with the morning star. (J.R.R. Tolkein presented a version of Ëarendil in The Silmarillion). Earendil is also called Orvandil, and has some links with the Celtic pantheon, where he is an ally of Nehalennia.

Wayland

Lesser Power, "Smith of the Gods"

AoC: Blacksmiths

AL: CN

WAL: Any, especially blacksmiths

Symbol: Sword

Home P/L/R: Ysgard/Ysgard/Asgard (Wayland's Smithy), Ysgard/Nidavellir/Svartalfheim

Known Proxies: None

Wayland is the god of smiths, and the smith of the gods. (Not my phrase, I'm afraid. Too clever for me.) He is especially associated with magical weapons, and is credited with having made Excalibur and many weapons belonging to the Celtic and Norse powers. He always appears as a lame man, in acknowledgement of a disagreement with some prime berk who thought it would be a good idea to pike off with a magic sword.

Wayland is associated with two realms: the first, Wayland's Smithy, is a subterranean hall in Asgard, from which passages lead to all the worlds where the Norse gods are worshipped. Entrances to it, both in Asgard and on the Prime, are marked by barrows and monoliths. Wayland is also credited with sharing Svartalfheim with Eilistraee, the only good drow power, although he's secretive about this. It's thought that Frey let him look after the drow, or Svart Alfar, whilst he looked after the Lios Alfar, the surface elves. Seeing as Elistraee's portfolio includes swordwork, this story doesn't sound so far-fetched.
