Persian Powers

(For On Hallowed Ground)

The religion of the ancient Persians was dictated mainly by a man named Zoroaster, founder of Zoroastrianism, and for this reason the two main powers are sometimes called the Zoroastrian powers. Zoroaster was a metaphysical dualist, which is to say that instead of observing the Rule of Threes, he believed in the polarity principle which states that concepts occur in opposing pairs. NB: This page is not intended as a commentary on any real world practice, and no challenge to Mazdaism is intended. The following is a work of interpretative fiction.

Ahura Mazdah

Greater Power, "Wise Lord"

AoC: Wisdom, benevolence, fertility, the sky.

AL: LG

WAL: Any good

Symbol: None known

Home P/L/R: Mt. Celestia/Unknown (Possibly in Chronias)

Known Proxies: Zoroaster (male human proxy/P20+/Fraternity of Order/LG) and all other Persian gods.

Ahura Mazdah is amongst the greatest powers of the multiverse. Under his control come all of what are considered by the Persians the positive aspects of life. He is credited with creating the heavens and the earth, giving life to men, delivering laws to people and judging everything. The views of other pantheon leaders on this are unrecorded. Ahura Mazdah does not shape up to Io the Ninefold Dragon in most people's opinions. Curiously, Ahura Mazdah is also credited with creating his arch enemy Angra Mainyu.

Anahita

Lesser Power, "The Immaculate"

AoC: Prosperity, justice, liquids

AL: LG

WAL: Any non-evil

Symbol: Unknown

Home P/L/R: Mt. Celestia/Lunia/Purifying Water

Known Proxies: None

Anahita is a power who was once mighty in her pantheon, but has abdicated much power in willing service to Ahura Mazdah. She is the spirit of prosperity, justice and good government, revealing Ahura Mazdah's plans to the wise and mighty. She also provides the power behind rites of initiation, and clings to some of the sexual aspects of her past existence, blessing the union of male and female as an analogue in personal life of the prosperity wrought by good leaders in the national sense. Her realm is like a small city, not unlike the City of the Star, on the River Eunoë near where it flows into the Glassy Sea.

Angra Mainyu

Greater Power, "Ahriman"

AoC: Dark forces, evil, darkness, sterility

AL: LE

WAL: Any evil

Symbol: None known

Home P/L/R: Baator/Nessus/The Tenebrous Abysm

Known Proxies: None

Angra Mainyu is the creation and enemy of Ahura Mazdah (q.v.), and is constantly seeking to overthrow his creator and rule in his stead. Persian mythology is principally about the conflict between these two powers. Angra Mainyu is all that Ahura Mazdah is not (except that both are powerful). Little is known about him, as he takes no part in other planar politics or the Blood War, and his realm is known only by dark repute.

Tishtrya

Lesser Power, "Rain"

AoC: Rain

AL: LG

WAL: Any non-evil

Symbol: Unknown

Home P/L/R: Mt. Celestia/Lunia/Water from Heaven

Known Proxies: None

Tishtrya is another of the loyal spirits who serve Ahura Mazdah. His principal achievement was destroying a demonic creature sent by Angra Mainyu called Apaosha, which was the bringer of drought. However, even that was only done by the aid of Ahura Mazdah. This story symbolises the whole Persian pantheon's reliance on their supreme ruler.
