Slavic Powers

(For On Hallowed Ground)

The Slavic pantheon is a young one, one that has been in ascendance even as the gods of the Kalevala have waned. Their worshippers are a hardy people and some of their powers are already famous, such as Baba Iaga, a witch-like demipower whose dancing hut is renowned as a miracle of magical engineering and also a nasty place to be. The powers have a strong elemental slant and all maintain inner-planar realms. Also, the Slavic powers do not by and large function as a whole, but more closely resemble a group of single- sphere powers, in that many have conflicting interests, and an overpower seems to control some aspects of their actions (see under Svarog)

Dazhbog

Intermediate Power, "Giving God"

AoC: The sun, plenty

AL: NG

WAL: Any

Symbol: The sun's disc

Home P/L/R: Quasi-Elemental Radiance/Eastern Splendour, Elysium/Eronia/Eastern Bounty

Known Proxies: None

Dazhbog is the brother of the fire god Svarog (q.v.) and a very popular power amongst the Slavs. As god of the sun, he is credited with providing his worshippers with many good things, in recognition that the sun gives rise to so much life. Dazhbog is thought to resemble a large man in glowing robes who drives a chariot driven by white horses.

Like many Slavic powers, he has two realms. Eastern Bounty in Elysium is technically his secondary realm, but holds all Dazhbog's petitioners. It appears as a broad swathe of rolling hills wrapped in dense pine forest punctuated with clear spaces for farming. It is always morning there. To reach it, a cutter must pass the Great Mountain of the East, which is Enlil's realm, and progress beyond it. No-one has yet explained the high density of dawn and sun powers in that corner of Elysium, but as well as Dazhbog and Enlil, Lathander and Ushas hang out here. Eastern Splendour in Quasi-Elemental Radiance is an impenetrable nexus of glowing clouds, much like the rest of the plane. However, any devout follower of Dazhbog who makes it that far and wears eye protection is protected from the other dangers of the plane.

Makosh

Intermediate Power, "Abundant Lady"

AoC: Fertility, moisture, maidens.

AL: NG

WAL: Any

Symbol: None known

Home P/L/R: Quasi-Elemental Mist/Blessed Dew, Elysium/Amoria/Rippling Rills

Known Proxies: None

Makosh, also known as Mokosh, is less popular than Dazhbog, but still a notable provider-deity. She has particular concern for rains, dew and streams, which water the land and make growth possible. Makosh has no fixed appearance, but typically looks like a slim and motherly woman. She is well-known for her concern for women's matters and as the object of a fertility cult.

Her elemental realm appears as a level grassy plain suspended in the Plane of Mist, where dew on every leaf twinkles in the light of positive energy filtering through the plane. Her Elysian realm is a wide swathe of damp farmland, criss-crossed by many tiny streams, which flow by every path and through all the fields.

Perun

Intermediate Power, "Piorun, the Thunder"

AoC: Thunder, war

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Thunderbolt

Home P/R: Quasi-Elemental Lightning/Storm Castle, Outlands/Mountain of Thunder

Known Proxies: None

Perun, the Slavic god of thunder, has been around a long time. But just recently, Rod has become less popular, and Perun has gained from this. Perun resembles in some respects Zeus or Thor, although he lacks the respect offered to those powers. His warlike aspect is also well-known, and armies of petitioners guard his Outland realm, near the Dwarven Mountain. Perun is fearsome when angry, but tolerable when placated, and is not at all evil, but merely ill-tempered. His elemental realm appears as a huge storm cloud with a castle of black stone on the top.

Rod

Intermediate Power, "Lightbringer"

AoC: Light, fertility, ancestors

AL: NG

WAL: Any

Symbol: Unknown

Home P/L/R: Quasi-Elemental Radiance/Starlight Palace, Bytopia/Dothion/Rod's Vineyard

Known Proxies: None

Rod was once a truly great power, but recently he has lost worshippers to Perun in large numbers, and seems to be declining. He is a god with many aspects, but he is slowly losing them as his power wanes. His principal aspect is one of fertility, always a popular Slavic theme, and he is also famed as the guardian of the dead. His petitioners retain their memories, and can be conjured if need be to answer queries. For performing his duty as their guardian, he is much honoured. His realm in Bytopia reflects his twin aspects of fertility and the dead, with large tracts of farmland being punctuated with symbolic tombstones, naming those who are working nearby. In Radiance, he has a palace all his own which sparkles and twinkles all the time (assuming you can see it, of course). He doesn't speak to Dazhbog, because they tend not to be worshipped in the same places.

Stribog

Lesser Power, "Whirlwind Monster"

AoC: The wind

AL: NE

WAL: NE (not many worshippers)

Symbol: Cone of wind

Home P/L/R: Elemental Air/Tornado of Torment, Carceri/Colothys/Paths of Fear

Known Proxies: Nightingale the Brigand (Px/human male/T12/Fated/NE)

Stribog is a little-known power sustained mainly by his own monstrous characteristics. He is the ruler of the winds, and is also a known encourager of kidnapping and theft. He is deeply unpopular, and may die soon. His Carcerian realm, the Paths of Fear, is basically an inescapable maze of cliff paths, where a stray gust of wind (of which there are many) may pluck you from safety into a ravine. His elemental realm is just as inhospitable, and has the added thrill of not containing any solid ground.

Svantovit

Intermediate Power, "Four Faces"

AoC: Soothsayers, divination, strength, war

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: White Horse

Home P/R: Elemental Water/In Aqua Veritas; Outlands/Four Doors

Known Proxies: None

Svantovit, alias Sventovit, is a powerful and strong god, mighty in battle. He watches over warriors and takes a keen interest in the outcome of war. He is also a patron of psychics and soothsayers, and his priests often perform auguries for farming communities to determine the quality of a coming harvest. One such ritual involves a white horse which is ridden between two ranks of upright spears, and the more spears the horse knocks over, the worse the forecast. A horn of wine is traditionally kept in Svantovit's temples, and an indication of the quality of coming harvests can be gained from how far the level of the wine drops over a year.

Svantovit's realm in Water is hard to find, but when reached, it is said, it yields the visitor insights into his future. Four Doors, in the Outlands near the Chronepseum, is an enormous temple compound, surrounded by a wooden stockade scores of feet high. Within is a huge wooden idol, through which the power speaks to his proxies and petitioners. Many of his petitioners practice as soothsayers.

Svarog

Greater Power, "Fire"

AoC: Fire, the sky

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Winged helm

Home P/R: Elemental Fire/Gates of Power

Known Proxies: None

Svarozhich

Lesser Power, "Son of Svarog"

AoC: Fire

AL: N

WAL: Any

Symbol: Flame

Home P/R: Elemental Fire/Gates of Power

Known Proxies: None

Svarizic, as Svarog is also called, is the divine image of the sky, and a power much associated with fire. His son, Svarozhich, brother of Dazhbog, is the actual personification of fire, and they share their realm in the elemental plane. However, although Svarog is the supreme god of Slavic religion, he is in fact a mere minor emissary of the 'Idle God', a massively potent overpower whose name may not be spoken and whose powers are beyond comprehension. Svarog is much worshipped for his role as go-between for this terrifying power, and his sons as well.

Veles

Intermediate Power, "Protector"

AoC: Farming, trade, the dead

AL: NG

WAL: Any

Symbol: Unknown

Home P/L/R: Elemental Earth/Catacombs of Volos, Bytopia/Shurrock/Veles' Kingdom

Known Proxies: Dmitri the Morbid (Solar aasimon)

Veles, alias Volos, is a guardian power. If Rod guards the souls of the dead, Veles watches their bodies. However, as Rod declines, Veles is gaining more responsibility for petitioners as well. Veles also guards farmers and merchants, and is a favoured patron of those going on long business trips. Herdsmen especially revere him, and his earth aspect reinforces this. His realm in Earth is merely a labyrinth of passages, more for show than anything else. But his Bytopian realm, opposite Rod's in Dothion, is a growing centre for commerce. There are many sheep and cattle farms in the hills here, and the central town, Vlasopolis, is a rival to Yeoman nowadays. Also within the realm is the tomb-city of Volograd, where Dmitri the Morbid keeps watch over empty tombs which, like the monuments in Rod's realm, mark the arrival of new petitioners in the realm.
