Ibn Fadlan, emissary of the Caliph of Bagdad; The City of Peace, sets out on a mission to king Yiltawar of the Saqaliba. Along this Journey he records his encounters with the Turks, the Hazars, the Saqaliba, the Baskirs, the Rus, and the Northmen.
In the land of the Bulgars along the shore of the mighty river Volga, he first gets a glimpse of a gigantic people, a people known as the Northmen. Here he interacted with them and learned their ways and sayed for some time.
One day a prince Wulfgar of the king and land of Rothgar came to their camp and asked their mighty chieftan "Buliwyf" to save their land from the doom of the mist. They accept, but not before consulting the resident Angel of Death (shae-woman). She fortold that Buliwyf's army must be 13 in number and the thirteenth warrior must be of foriegn land....and she pointed to Ibn Fadlan. Ibn then refused saying he was no warrior and would be of no use to them. Then threatened with death he was forced to comply. Ibn Fadlan then began his legendary journey to the land of Rothgar.
After a lengthy journey Buliwyf's 13 including Ibn arrived in the Kingdom of Rothgar. They were met with destruction, death, and a desperate people.
For the first time, Ibn Fadlan sees expressions of fear and horror on the faces of the gigantic Norhtmen. For this destruction and death came with the mist that filled the kingdom at night....a relentless mist that kills them and burns their dwellings to the ground...stealing off with the bodies of fallen Norhtmen...for with the mist comes the WENDOL...and the WENDOL are THE EATERS OF THE DEAD....
