Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Reviews

Here I have wrote some reviews of some Science Fiction and Fantasy books that I have read. Most of these books I read I liked, and I think you will too. More will follow as I get a chance to write them. I have sorted the reviews by author. Note: For each book there is a short summary of the book, and then my review designated by an "*".  I am working on including covers to the novels, and depending on download time, I may split these page into multiple ones by author.

The Ender Quartet

Homecoming

The Ender Quartet

---Ender's Game
Earth has been attacked twice by an alien race, barely surviving both times. As a last resort, the military has taken to breeding military geniuses to command a fleet sent to destroy the aliens once and for all. Ender is a genius among geniuses, and he has been choosen to go to battle school and be trained to be a military leader. He is Earth's last hope for survival, but can he be the leader that humanity needs??

*I thought this book was very well written. Card develops the plot and his characters extreamely well, and is very descriptive and pays close attention to details. He keeps you wanting to read the book, and you don't want to put it down. This is perhaps my most favorite book in the series, and possible my most favorite Sci-Fi book. I HIGHLY recommend it.

---Speaker For The Dead 415 pages
In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: the Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.

Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening... again, humans die. and it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.

*This book once again demonstrates Card's excellent writing abilities, using plot and character deveolpment, and excellent desctiptions. This book adds mystery, intrigue, love, ethics, and a distinctive Sci-Fi twist. Also highly recommended.

---Xenocide 592 pages
On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought.

But Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus which kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to transform into adults. The Starways Congress so fears the effect of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there. The Fleet is on its way, and a second Xenocide seems inevitable.

Until the Fleet vanishes.

The Task of discovering how the ships were made to disappear falls to Gloriously Bright, the most brilliant analytical mind in a world of people bred to superintelligence. There is little doubt that she cansolve the puzzle; but will she choose life or death for the three races who live on Lusitania?

*Not to be repeating myself, but this is also a great book, and one that I recommend if you are reading the Ender series. Card deals with hard ethical dilemmas, yet still keeps his unique style of writing and sharp descriptiveness. I highly enjoyed this book, as it kept you on the edge, and kept your interest throughout.

Terry Brooks

The First King of Shannara (prelude to The Sword)

The Shannara Triliogy

The Heritage of Shannara

The Shannara Trilogy

---The Sword of Shannara 726 pages
Long ago, the wars of ancient Evil had ruined the world and forced mankind to compete with many other races--gnomes, trolls, dwarfs, and elves. But in the peaceful Shady Vale, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knew little of such troubles.

Then came the giant, forbidding Allanon, possessed of strange Druidic powers, to reveal that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destroy the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the Sword of Shannara, which could only be used by a true heir of Shannara. On Shea, last of the blood line, rested the hope of all races.

Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of Evil, flew into the Vale, seeking to destroy Shea. To save the Vale, Shea flees, drawing the Skull Bearer after him.

Thus begins the seemingly hopeless quest of a simple man against the greatest power of evil the world has ever known.

*Terry Brooks is also one of my favorite authors. He goes into great depth in his plots and characters. Brooks' world come alive through his writing techniques and story line. He flawlessly ties characters and events together, creating a perfect, epic saga that any Fantasy fan will surely enjoy.

---The Elfstones of Shannara 564 pages
Ancient Evil threatens the Elves. For the Ellcrys--the tree created by long-lost Elven magic--is dying, loosing the Spell of Forbidding that bars the hordes of vengeful Demons from the Races of Man.

Allanaon, legendary guardian of Earth, summons Wil Ohmsford to guard the Elven girl Amberle on a perilous quest as she carries a seed from the Ellcrys to the mysterious Bloodfire, there to be quickened into a new Ellcrys.

Ravening behind them comes the Reaper, most fearsome of all Demons. Against it, Wil has only the Elfstones of Shannara--and he has lost all power to control them. Helplessly, he watches the shadow of the Reaper appear on the trail before him...

Here are valiant companions, awesome foes, wonders--and the ancient mystery of how the Elves survived.

*In this sequel to The Sword of Shannara, Brooks once again goes into great depth. The story line is intense, suspenseful, and mysterious, keeping you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Brooks keeps the Shannara saga alive with this volume.
