As I browsed through your homepage I was intrigued to notice your boycott of the NIKE corporation for their use of child labor in "third world countries". As a second year Economics student at the U o A I know a great deal on the subject and am willing to debate this point with you. One of the 3 third year courses I took this year was Labor Economics 331 and we took this subject at length so I am qualified to enlighten your narrow point of veiw. You are wrong. The majority of textiles and footwear made by ANY manufacturer(ie. Adidas, Reebok, Fila, Tommy Hillfinger, Pepe, Club Manaco, Levis, The Gap, etc.)are made in Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Mexico, India, and yes, child labor is involve in some of these countries. However, most of these garments are made by women who would otherwise have no job. Therefore by trying to put NIKE out of business, YOU are trying to strip these poor women of their job and therefore any wealth and political power they have. I know what your saying, "What wealth? These women (and children) are getting paid a few cents an hour!". This is true, however,in Asia (especially since last October), a few cents is worth enough to be at least equal to a subsistance w ge. Therefore, you have a choice, either continue to wear your "brand" clothes and be a hippocrit while at the same time trying to put an already oppressed group at further disadvantage by stripping them of monetary wealth, or grow up and realize that th world isn't black and white and thus one can't be idealistic. Every issue is very complicated and one should be as informed as possible before making a decision, so as not to sound like a FOOL.
