In the Dark

by Sara Kennedy

Misty gray
as the lights in the park come on.
Footstep rhythm drowns out a heartbeat
As i slip....
slowly into the darkness.
I peer into the shadows
and watch the predator approach.

It is my soul, it is my nightmare.
It kills my dreams
This mirage of oozing tar
holds me with invisible claws.

I long to look deeper,
to dive in, yet I dare not.
Death is hiding there beneath
that shiny surface, and it calls out.
It knows my name.

That single light,
struggling to outwit the darkness,

flickers.
