Shock Awakening

by Sara Kennedy

Shock awakening
JUMP from these sheets
At the face of something too horrible to imagine
That red faced, slick, annoying-yet so accurate
Little object sitting there
Staring at me, saying,
“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING, YOU FOOL??”
And all I can do is gasp
Shake my head
Denying it all.
How could this have happened to me!
My heart pounds as I reach
For my broken black spectacles
Rubbing my eyes,
Hoping the combination will contradict
My initial viewing
Ist possible?
Is my waking to be worse
than any nightmare
in that extra hour of sleep???
