Interviews

I'm a researcher who works as a freelance writer in what I laughingly call my "spare time" (in between raising a 10-year-old daughter, rehabbing a three-story turn-of-the-century house, trying to maintain a web site and, of course, my full-time job, in other words). My main interests are comic books and science fiction. I've interviewed several writers and comic book creators, mostly for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I hope to eventually put up the transcripts of most of the original interviews for these stories, and probably the unpublished interviews with Bill Griffith (Zippy the Pinhead), John Blair Moore (Invaders From Home, Virtual Reality), Howard Cruse (Stuck Rubber Baby), Denny O'Neil (Batman) and Neil Gaiman (not much he hasn't said a dozen times elsewhere, I'm afraid) - although I may try to sell the latter in some form before I put them up here for free. It's a lot easier to sell interviews with science fiction writers than comic book writers or artists, though, and a couple of these are pretty old (I interviewed Griffith not long after I interviewed art spiegelman).

These interview articles are all pretty basic, because they were written for a general audience, most of whom hadn't heard of any of these people except Ray Bradbury. One reason I'd like to eventually get the transcripts up here is that with most of these - especially the comics folks - there was lots of good stuff that never made it into the newspaper article. Of course, the unedited transcripts often have me coming off like a goofy fanboy who talks too much, especially the first few when I didn't know what I was doing. NOTE: I've included Gaiman in both places, because he's best known as a comics writer, but the interview was done in conjunction with the book tour for the text-only version of "Stardust," and even with the pictures by Vess that wasn't really a comic to begin with.
