Congratulations to our two Spelling Bee '98 finalists: Ashley and Justin. Nice Job!!! They will represant our class in the intermediate grade finals at our school. 2/9/98

The Book Fair started today! Each student gets a dollar off any purchase or he/she can get a free book with their "Book Buck". We had two special guests that came to our school; Franklin the Turtle and Clifford the Dog!

2/11/98

Today we finished our National Spelling Bee at school. The winner for the primary grades(second and third grade)was a third grader named Linda from Mrs. Graf's class. The winner for the intermediate grades(fourth, fifth and sixth grade) was Jeffrey in Mrs. Fletcher's class from fourth grade. Linda and Jeffrey will compete in the district finals at Abbott Middle School. If they are lucky enough they will then go to the Illinois finals. After that comes the United States Finals in Washington D.C. GOOD LUCK!!!

One of the 5th grade teachers, Ms. Ziegler, just had one of the best days of her life! Her boyfriend, Joe, proposed to her at about 1:30 p.m. at our school. He brought her a bouquet of red roses. Joe arrived in a white limosine, with the words "Will You Marry Me" written on the windows. Joe took her to Florida after school. They will be back on Tuesday, February 17th. They are now officially engaged! :-) Congratulations from everyone at Century Oaks Elementary School!!!

2/16/98

Our school has started collecting pennies. Our goal is 1,000,000 pennies! Each classroom has a water jug and students bring in pennies to fill it. Our class has a lot of pennies already!

2/17/98

Eric and Deon are going to play each other in the semi-finals of the boy's basketball competition, we are having here at school. They will play on Thursday morning. The games they will be playing are Horse, Around the World, and 21. GOOD LUCK!

3/5/98

Eric was our champion for the 6th grade boys tournament and now a 6th grade girls basketball tournament has started! There are 10 girls in our class who are going to be competing against other girls in 6th grade. They are Kari, Jillian, Michele, Brigette, Trisha, Sarah, Gezime, Kristina, Athi, and Ash. Kari played Monday, March 2 and won! Kristina also won her game! She played Thursday, March 5. Congradulations to those who have won and Good Luck to those who are yet to play! 4/3/98

The Third Quarter has just passed and we were excited to see more names appear on our Honor Roll. The following are names of students who made it for the third quarter: Nathan, Craig, Paul, Jorge, Brad, Justin, Michele, Jillian, Allison, Barbara, Darrell, Gezime, Kari, Trisha, Brigette, Athi, and Ashley. These students had recieved B's or higher level grades on their report cards.

Our school was collecting Boxtops for Education from the top of cereal boxes. We met our deadline of March 31st and submitted $176.60 worth toward Learning Center materials.

4/15/98

Last night we had our annual Spring Sing. It was a big success. Students from our school sang on the topic "From Sea to Shining Sea!" The program started with the Kindergarten and First grade singing traditonal songs and concluded with the Fifth and Sixth grade singing a rap of all the states and their capitals.

A Third grader in Mrs.Marsh's class won the City of Elgin Arbor Day Essay Contest. Her name is Chelsea. This means that a presentation will be held tonight at the City Council Meeting and the city is planting a tree in our school's front yard. The tree planting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday morning with the Mayor, City Manager, and Council members here for news photos. CONGRADULATIONS CHELSEA!!!!!!!!!!

5/8/98

We will be having our annual Flower Sale! All the kids at our school get to come down and buy a flower for their moms because, as you know, Mother's Day is coming up! The patrols at our school have this sale to raise money for their annual trip to Racing Rapids. Flowers cost a dollar a piece and are set in a pot that is wrapped in foil. It is for a good cause and it will bring the moms happiness on this very special day. Happy Mother's Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
