The
people that participated in my study talked about the family
being in crisis because families spend less and less time
together. There is less of a commitment to the family now
than there used to be.
This
is explained in part by the fact that there are more things
to do away from the family today. One example is the TV.
With multiple tv's in each household the family is no longer
watching tv together, rather, people leave the room if they
are not interested in the program.
It
is also explained in part by the ease with which divorce is
obtained. It is no longer "for better and for worse" it is
"until we grow apart." The commitment to one family is no
longer life long, but that doesn't mean that the commitment
to the family as an institution in society has lessened. A
person can be divorced and still see the family as a
cornerstone in our society.
So
do we have a family crisis or do we have a change in the
definition of the family?
This
part is still under construction. As I find more information
and get it in writing it will appear here.
