The Purpose...

The Torbay Heritage Committee was established to produce a display of historical artifacts for everyone to view. Another goal of the committee is to preserve and promote the heritage of Torbay. The committee was first affiliated with the public library and was under the direction of President Dr. Jim Tag and Vice-President John Ryan. The first members of the committee included: Claire Tapper, Gerald Manning, Genie Tapper, Marie Evans, John Molloy, Frank Ryan, Judy Watts and Don Cole. The group was originally known as the library and heritage board until they eventually became their own committee The group meets once a month (except during the summer months) to plan and carry out projects that relate to this preservation.

The Projects...

The committee has been very active over the past year and are in the process of completing numerous projects.

Torbay Waterfront Archaeological Survey - After persistent encouragement to Memorial University of Newfoundland from the Heritage Committee, the Archaeology Unit plans a one or two day archaeology survey of the Torbay Waterfront. Students in the Archaeology Field School will dig shovel tests here and there throughout this area. When the tests are completed, sods will be replaced and the landscape will be restored. Selected artifacts collected will be identified at the Archaeology Unit. The purpose of the survey is to identify any early European occupation in Torbay. (Taken from a Public Notice on the subject stated above)

Designation of Popular Old Walking Trails - The committee has been discussing recently the plans to revive old walking trails. These trails are ones that our ancestors used in their era. The committee is looking at old maps and talking to people of the community to see if this type of preservation is possible. This preservation will also help to protect these old walking trails.

Torbay Heritage Cookbook - The committee is also in the process of creating a cookbook of all different sorts of recipes and little tidbits of information about Torbay and it's heritage. The cookbook is still in the making but will be available to you very soon. So stay tuned...

Johnson Family Foundation - A sign will be erected along the Father Troy Trail (a walking trail in Torbay that goes from Spray Lane to Church Cove - the original trail of Early Settlers) that will tell some information of Torbay's history. The funding for this sign comes from the Johnson Family Foundation.
