Oasis of Siwa

A forgotten place in the middle of nowhere, a place that used to be important, a place that marked the history of Egypt...

In those times when Thebes was still the capital of Egypt, two doves left the Egyptian capital. One landed in Greece and led to the creation of the famouse Greek Oracle. The other one landed in Siwa, the other Oracle of the Ancient world.

This place is the Oasis of Siwa which is located in the Egyptian desert that borders Libia. A small village stands there and has always stood there as if the winds in the desert haven't been able to blow it away. 2000 years passed since Alexander the Great came there but the Oracle still exits...

How did the Oracle look like ? In fact, the Oracle wasn't a person or a personification of God, it was simply symbolized by a little ship which was placed in a isolated room of a temple. The little ship was put on a kind of scale and would move in one direction for a "yes" and in the other direction for a "no". The Oracle could only answer "yes" or "no" to questions. Only the priests of the temple were allowed to bring someone in front of the Oracle.

What's the truth behind the Oracle ? For those who believe in fortune teller, the Oracle is simply a way that God has used to communicate with us. But after some researches in the temple of Siwa, archaeologists discovered some secret walls and places where priests could have listened to the questions that were asked by the great leaders of that time. They knew the questions, but if it really happened like this, it also means that they could have chosen the answers too. It would have been easy for them to move secretly the ship from behind the walls. There is no clear evidence that the priests manipulated the leader through the Oracle but this is a possibility.

Alexander the Great, one of the greatest conqueror of all times, came to Siwa two thousand years ago. He came there with the intention to talk with the Oracle which was famous for predicting the future. The Oracle could only answer questions by yes or no and only important people were allowed to meet the Oracle.

When Alexander the Great arrived in Siwa, he had already conquered a part of Egypt. He was already a great leader so what could a great leader ask to the Oracle ? Alexander entered the room of the Oracle and asked two questions: Will I rule the world ? The Oracle answered "yes". The second question was: Am I the son of God ? The Oracle answered "yes" again. History is the evidence that the Oracle was at leat partly right because Alexander conquered so much piece of land that he became the master of the Ancient World. In order to thank the Oracle, Alexander decided to choose Siwa as a burial place.

Alexander the Great died at the age of 33 in Babylon. He first got buried in Babylon but he was brought later on to Alexandria. The search for Alexander's coffin has always been a synonym of mystery. Lots of scientists or archaeologists have tried to find the coffin in several places, mainly in Alexandria but recent theories seem to point out that Alexander would be buried in Siwa! Another wrong theory ? Perhaps not because it seems that the Egyptian government is taking this theory really seriously, the place around the alledged burial place has been fenced by the governement. No one is allowed to dig and search the place, what does that mean ? Is Alexander really buried in Siwa ? We'll have to wait for this answer. Egypt hasn't unveiled all its secrets....
