Washington Assessment on Student Learning (WASL)

This page will inform you of the rationale for administering the WASL to students as well as give you a guide to aid in preparation for the WASL.

Introduction:
Washington State is developing a new assessment system based on the Essential Academic Learning Requirements, (ELARs) in language arts and mathematics. Eventually other academic subjects may be included as well. The aim of the new state-level assessments is to document the ways in which Washington State's education system is helping students learn and demonstrate their knowledge of the EALRs. The Washington Assessment of Student Learning,(WASL), provides important informtation to ensure that the education system is providing the best educational opportunities possible for all students.

Sample Mathematics WASL Questions:

1. With 40 feet of fencing material, what is the largest garden area you can make?

2. Simplify the following expression.
6ab + 4b - 3a - 2ab +b(3a - 4) + 9

3. The students at Snohomish High School sold raffle tickets for a fund raiser. They sold 50 tickets numbered 1 - 50. If three winning tickets will be chosen one after the other and the same ticket cannot be drawn twice, what is the probability that all three winners have odd numbered tickets? Show your work.

4. Jenny works on weekends testing lightbulbs before packaging them. On Saturday, 17 bulbs failed the test. On Sunday, 102 more lightbulbs passed the test than failed it. What other information do you need to find the percentage of bulbs that pass on Saturday and on Sunday.
