Subject: FBI: Serves and Protects (the FBI) From: TL.WU@uu.uunet (Terence L. Wu) Former FBI Agent Eugene Bennett was found guilty yesterday on all counts against him. Mr. Bennett, you will recall, tried to kill his estranged, also former FBI Agent, wife after he discovered she was having a lesbian affair with mystery novel writer Patricia Cornwell. This affair started, according to both Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, at the FBI academy where Patricia Cornwell was studying to write a new book. Mr. Bennett's rampage included planting bombs, kidnapping and holding police at bay for hours. Mr. Bennett claimed that he was possessed by an evil alter ego "Ed" who made him do all those nasty things. The jury deliberated just 12 hours on his claim that he was driven to insanity by his wife's actions and rejected it with the guilty verdicts. Bennett (and ED) could get 61 years in jail. The Judge has scheduled sentencing for May. This latest stain against the Federal leading bureau of law enforcement is one of many that have transpired over the past twelve months under the stewardship of Louis Freeh. Last year we had FBI Agent Francis Gary Harlow plead guilty that he stole over 100,000 rounds of ammunition, fully automatic weapons, plastic explosives and hand grenades from the FBI. No one at the FBI knew Harlow was better armed than David Koresch. No one knew until he alledgedly punched his wife out one winter night and she told the doctors about his stolen arsenal. Local police picked Harlow up cruising in his car, looking for his wife, along with seven fully automatic weapons. It was only after Harlow plead guilty to reduced charges, recieving a six month sentence, that the public discovered he also faked security clearances for the Clinton White House in addition to his midnight shopping at the FBI academy. Attention shoppers! We have a green light special in the machine gun isle! Today only H&K fully auto, 9 mm with 30, 50 and 90 round mags! Then we had top secret FBI files illegally obtained by the White House. First it was 200, then 300, then 400 then... 900? First it was the Secret Services fault, then Craig Livingstone's. Even the FBI Director himself would get into the act when his review implied the White House had "abused" the FBI. That comment lasted about as long as the echo because once Clinton heard it then he immediately twisted Louis' arm and had the Director take back all those nasty things he said. Still something had to be done about the FBI files fiasco. Louis Freeh's hand picked FBI legal counsel, Mr. Shapiro went to the White House to retrieve the illegally obtained FBI files. However, he left at least one box full of FBI computer records, claiming that they were not FBI property. Of course, we can forgive Mr. Shaprio for not recognizing NCIC computer print outs as FBI property since he was never trained in law enforcement and has no experience with FBI systems. Nice pick, Louis! Then we had the still unsolved Atlanta bombing and Richard Jewell suspect screw up. Today Mr. Jewell is preparing to take the agency to trial - not the other way around. Then we had the still unsolved TWA800 crash.. No suspects, no leads, no ideas. However, that did not stop the FBI from supporting President Clinton's draconian "Anti-Terrorist" proposals following the crash. We don't know if it was lax FAA inspection or a terrorist but we are sure that getting rid of all those nasty civil liberties will solve all the problems. Then we had a top FBI Agent plead guilty to submitting false evidence in the Randy Weaver - Ruby Ridge case. Then we had a top FBI instructor on counter-espionage turn traitor. He was captured by a sting operation which offered him a few thousands of dollars for secrets, names and even his FBI pass badge. Of course, this was not the first time he had traded secrets since his sting contact had already established the fact that he used to deal often with the Soviet embassy, during the old KGB days. The Iron Curtain may have fallen but SVRR money is just as good, comrade. Then we had the FBI labs discover that they were not a crime lab so much as a conviction mill. The lack of science to support FBI prosecutions has already had an effect on the Oklahoma bombing trial. Mr. Wizard where are you when we need you? The FBI is an agency built from the top down. The leadership must provide a foundation of honesty, and tireless pursuit of justice or the troops, like little lost sheep, will go their seperate ways. Overall, the performance of the FBI under Louis Freeh is the making of either a very bad comedy or a very good dirty movie. The agency has taken on the appearance of bungling Freehstone Kops engaged in erotic practices with explosives, top secret files and live ammunition. "FBI Academy - The Movie" would be a replay of the crazy Police Academy movies complete with a special sound effects and sight gags. At the head of the silly police would be a man with a big red nose and squeeky shoes, jogging around the track with the FBI cadets each morning. The FBI under Louis Freeh has turned into a joke, a political hack force of groupies seeking publicity, and access to an unrestricted arsenal of weapontry. Which ever way you want to look at the last year at the FBI, tragedy or comedy, the clear impression is for a change in the cast, especially the leading role. 1 if by land, 2 if by sea.
