Sir Rowan

Sir Rowan Thorne is an old-school Knight of the Realm, the highest-ranking of Lord Trefeln's soldiers and a highly skilled and redoubtable warrior. He is utterly dedicated to his job (specifically, killing things whilst making every effort not to have the favour returned), and is extremely good at it - he certainly earned his Knighthood. He is also about as bright as a coal cellar during an eclipse and has the imagination of a remedial pebble, but then this has probably been a major contribution to his success in the military - intelligence and an enquiring mind tend not to play a significant part when your principal job requirement is the ability to shout "Die, scum!" in a loud voice, whilst swinging some kind of sharp metal implement around your head.

Technically he outranks the various Generals who delegate for Lord Trefeln, but he still takes orders from them because it makes his life altogether less complicated. This is the main reason why he still serves amongst the rank and file in the army, because soldiering is what he's always done, and he doesn't like to be elevated above what he considers to be his station. He has a tremendous respect for authority, and admires the Sizan Commander greatly; although perhaps surprisingly, he looks up to Trefeln because of what he does rather than just because he ranks higher than him. In his opinion, any leader who would willingly take on an entire orc encampment armed with nothing but a teaspoon is worth following. He does encounter problems when his superiors attempt to talk to him, however, as his voice-box suddenly seems to close for repairs. If truth be told, it makes him rather uncomfortable - he is much happier when they just issue commands in single syllables and at a volume that could perforate the eardrums of an elephant.

Rowan possesses many admirable qualities in his own right. He is fearsomely brave, and has a strong (if occasionally misguided) sense of honour; and his straightforward and good-humoured nature has made him highly popular amongst all his colleagues, with the notable exception of Cedric Frozenstream, who (slightly unfairly) considers him the most moronic creature ever to hold a sword the right way up. This dislike is wholly mutual, and so it was pretty much inevitable that they would end up working together.

Their being taken hostage by the Clan Pickaxe does little to help matters. They certainly become closer, but this is mainly due to the length of rope used to tie them together.
