The Beer Monsters

Those of you who've glanced at the OWCH site might be wondering how Ogrokh and Mozgrog ended up as commentators for a major orc wrestling competition. The reason is quite straightforward; as with most sports commentators they themselves were once competitors in the field, and they are therefore considered perfectly qualified to state the blindingly obvious about it for hours on end. Perhaps more surprising, however, is the fact that they were both champions in the OWCH league; and the above illo shows them in their wrestling heyday as The Beer Monsters, the most fearsome tag-team ever to tie people’s limbs into interesting geometric shapes. They held the title for about three years, following a titantic battle with the previous champions; but there’ll be more about that later.

It took me a while to work out how their costumes should look; the idea was to blend together the concepts of traditional Dungeons & Dragons-style monsters and drinking lots of alcohol, but when it came to actually drawing the thing it turned out to be surprisingly tricky. I think the final picture works well though, especially the running grog-barrel motif (I was particularly pleased with the warpaint on their stomachs), and the fact that they both look younger. Their time as a tag-team takes place quite a few years before the events of Orcs!, so it was important to get that in there.
