Heads and Shoulders
...but no knees or toes, because let’s face it, they’re not that interesting. Unless you’re Sarah Ferguson, apparently.
Facial expressions are the key to any good cartoon AS ANY FULE KNO, so it’s always helpful to experiment with them before you embark on a finished drawing. These were drawn in the process of creating several of the pictures in the Curiosities section, including this one, this one, this one and this one, and of course the one you clicked on to find this, you clever thing you. Some of these sketches are all but identical to what appeared in the finished illos, while others were abandoned at an early stage. My first design of Mozgrog in his Beer Monster costume, for instance; I’d imagined that having his helmet fall down over his eyes would make him look daft and amiable, but in fact it removed all his personality, and actually made him look slightly sinister. It’s amazing what a difference it makes when you can’t see the eyes of a character.
Another possibly diverting thing is the sketch in the middle, which of course isn’t a face at all. I drew this purely to show what the tattoo on Grall’s back looked like, so that I could work out which bits of it could be seen from the front. Gosh, eh?
Right then, copyright time. Kastrar (top left) and Alino (bottom left, bottom right) are © Rakeesh; Biff (top right) is © Vince Suzukawa; and Grall (the three going across the middle) is © er, Grall. So now you know.
Okay, move along. Nothing else to see here.
