The Twentieth Century: A Time To Remember
8th grade Project Guidelines

Background:
 As we begin a new century, it is important to reflect on the events and lessons of the passing century. The Twentieth Century was a time of great change in the United States. Americans experienced both the best and worst of times. Through research and analysis, not only can we remember, we can understand. Through understanding we can learn. By looking to the past, we can improve our future.

Project Components:
· four one page essays about an assigned year
· a Power point slide/oral presentation about an assigned year
· a bibliography of sources used for research
· an art project related to an assigned year
· a portfolio of the research process- guidelines, note cards, writing drafts, edited work, and final copies

Procedure:
1. Mrs. Lamphere will assign you a year to research and Mrs. Woods will review the project guidelines.
2. You will be given a folder in which to keep your guidelines and all research materials. Don't lose it because you will be given a grade on its completeness at the end of the project.
3. Follow all guidelines exactly. Your grades will be based on both the quality of your work and how well you follow the directions in the guidelines.
4. Turn all work in on time. Your grades will be reduced for late assignments.
5. You will be given class time to work on this project, but the majority of the project is to be completed at home.

Assessment:
· There will be one homework grade given in Social Studies for having the project guidelines signed on time by your parent/guardian (January 13th)
· Each final essay will receive one test grade (Lang. Arts, Science, Religion, Social Studies)
· The Power point slide presentation will receive one grade for Computer and one test grade for Social Studies.
· The bibliography will receive one glasswork grade in Literature.
· The art project will receive a grade in Art.
· The portfolio will be collected and checked for completeness by each homeroom teacher and a class work grade in Literature will be recorded.
· The note cards, peer editing, and rough draft will receive a class work grade in each class (Lang. Arts, Science, Religion, and Social Studies).

Formatting:
· Each essay is to be one page in length.
· Each essay should have an introductory paragraph, two paragraphs containing details and supporting information, and a concluding paragraph summarizing the topic.
· Documents should be spell checked and edited for proper use of English grammar and mechanics.
· Double spaced
· Size 12 font - Times New Roman
· No Bold - No Clip Art
· One inch margins on each side and top and bottom
· The bibliography must follow the MLA style guidelines in your research portfolio.
· You must have a title and by-line for each essay.

Sources:
You must have a minimum of 6 sources.
· at least 1 source must be a newspaper from the your assigned year
· at least 1 source must be a current or past news magazine, such as TIME or Newsweek
· at least 1 source must be a book
· other sources can be from the Internet or software, such as CD-ROM

Criteria for Essays

Use the following topics to guide your research and writing about your assigned year.

Social Studies

· Discuss one or two major events that occurred in the United States during your year and explain how that event or those events effected American society.
· How did this/these event(s) change American culture?
· Did it improve relations between ethnic, racial, or gender groups?
· Did it rally Americans together or tear them apart?
· Did it change the role of women in society?
· Did it divide generations?
· What lasting impact did it have on society?
· In your introduction, include a brief synopsis of what life was like in the United States during your year.
· What trends were popular?
· What music was popular?
· What clothes were stylish?
· What activities were popular?

Science

· Discuss one or two of the major technological advances of your year. Explain why the technology was important to the everyday life of Americans.
· What did this technological improvement change?
· Did this technology lead to more inventions and improvements in technology?
· Include information about one mathematician or scientist that was important to that year. Did he/she win a Nobel Prize or other achievement award? If yes, then why?

Language Arts:

 You will have a options in the way that you write your language arts essay. Those options are listed below:
1. If a major literary work was published in your assigned year, then write an essay on the impact that it had on American society. In this essay, make sure that you include a biographical sketch of the author, a brief summary of the book and a discussion of the book’s impact on society (in other words, how did society respond to the book?).
· In order to assist you, research what book won the Pulitzer Prize, the Newbery Award, the Golden Kite Award, or the Boston Globe Award that year.
2. Based on your research, write an editorial essay (as a reporter) on which event had the greatest effect on society. Make sure that you support your argument in a logical fashion.
3. Write a creative essay describing the impact of specific events of your year on the life of an eighth grader in your assigned year. This essay may be a diary entry or a reflective memoir.

Religion:

 In your religion essay, include the following topics:
· Write a brief biographical sketch of the pope (this should contain any positions the pope held before he became pope).
· Discuss any writings done by the pope during your particular year and how these writings  contributed to the church.
· Based on your reading how did this particular pope contribute to the Catholic Church?
You may include:
· the names of any persons made saints during your year, and his/her country.
· any significant changes that took place in the church during your particular year.
