The Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest

   Someone dropped a whole box of paints into the sand here.  There are layers upon layers of different colors of soil.  Those trees aren't exactly what you think of as normal trees.  What made the soil so different?  What caused those trees to get hard as rocks?

Here are some questions that you need to answer.

1. What is petrified wood?
2. When was the petrified forest formed?
