William H. Brown (1835-1913) and Eliza C. Quarles Brown (1844-1862)

William Henderson (Bill) Brown was born 08 Feb 1835 in Dekalb County, Tennessee, near Silver Point in Putnam County, TN. He was the son of Walker Brown and Betty Anderson Brown. Walker Brown was the first school teacher at Buffalo Valley in Putnam County.

Bill Brown and Eliza C. Quarles were married about 1858 or 1859. Eliza Quarles was the daughter of Thaddeus C. Quarles and Elizabeth Williamson Quarles.

Brown enlisted in H Co., of Forrest's 3rd TN Cav Regt and served four years during the War between the States. During the time that he was away, Eliza gave birth to a daughter named Sara Ann (Sally) Brown on 12 June 1860. When the child was less than 2 years old, Eliza C Quarles Brown died. The child was left with Eliza's parents.

Bill Brown apparently did not know of the birth of his daughter or of the death of his wife until he returned home from the war. He left his daughter with her grandparent's and returned to the home of his parents.
