Circle Casting

Please note, this is not the only way to cast a circle.

Items you would need:

  • Salt Water (if indoors, in a bowl)
  • Fire (if indoors, light a candle)
  • Cauldron
  • Charcoal
  • Ritual Incense and Oils
  • Matches
  • Athame, Wand, Staff, or Sword (this is actually optional)

Using the Athame, Wand, Staff, Sword (or your "power finger" - the index finger of the hand you use most in writing) make a circle. You can walk in a circle three times, stand in the center and create the circle about you, etc. As you create the circle, you need to bind it so that no other energy may enter it. Rhiannon uses a rhyme she wrote: "By earth, by air, by fire, by sea, this circle is sacred...so mote it be." It is always good to have all four of the elements present when doing this - salt water (earth and water), a lit candle (fire), and incense (air). Be sure to create your circle clockwise, no matter how you choose to create the circle.

If you wish to continue on for a spell, then you should face each direction and call upon the Guardians of the Watchtowers. Rhiannon uses another rhyme for this - "Guardians of the Watchtowers - east, west, south, north. I call upon thee, all come forth!"

The next step would be to invoke the God and Goddess, as well as whatever spirits or deities you need for your spell.

Light the appropriate candles, burn your incense, mix your herbs, annoint yourself with oils, meditate, or do whatever you need to do to complete your spell.

Always be sure to thank the God and Goddess (as well as the Guardians and deities) for their help and release their energy. Then close your circle by doing the same thing you did to open it - i.e., use the same tool and same manner. Make sure it is done counter-clockwise and say, "The circle is closed, but not broken. Blessed be!"

Please note two important things - 1) Do not ever leave the circle once it has been cast unless you create a "door" for yourself. If you leave the circle without creating a door or closing the circle entirely, then the energy will dissipate, and you may also damage your own energy. 2) This is not the only way to create a circle! This is simply one way; you must find the way that works best for you. For example, Ileana always includes "in perfect love and perfect trust" in her circle-casting and always uses a wand she made herself; Quiet Thinker uses his "power finger" and hardly ever walks in a circle to make it; Rhiannon uses an athame that has been cleansed, blessed, and charged. It is up to you to find your path.
