My Bronx and
History Page
In 1639 Jonas Bronck arrived in the new world and settled in what is now known as the Bronx, then called Rananchqua by the native Indians but later refered to as broncksland by the English and Dutch. Jonas purchased 500 acres from the native Indians between the Harlem and Aquehung (Bronx ) Rivers. There are many stories as to how the Bronx got it's name, the most popular being that rivers were always proceded by "the" thus giving it's name "The Bronx".
