Olympic Peninsula Chapter Hello. We've been organized as a Bluebill chapter
since 1998 to offer volunteer and social opportunities to retirees in
counties on the Olympic Peninsula. One of
our primary objectives is to serve other retirees in need and we have
our own Independent Living program, which helps fragile senior citizens
remain in their own homes rather than be moved into care facilities. Within Clallam and Jefferson counties,
hundreds of seniors live in poverty. We
continue to welcome new volunteers and our chapter now has over one
hundred members. About half of our members
are active in doing volunteer work and we typically contribute over
5,000 hours each year to the welfare of our communities. Do you want to know what we do for "fun?" Here are some of the accomplishments over the years, since 1998. • Completed 100's of projects, including building 100's of access ramps, installing 100's of grab bars and performing other "quality of life" modifications such as installing steps, handrails, shower plumbing, lever-type door handles and making minor household repairs. Since 1998 our Independent Living Program has touched the lives of 100's of elderly or needy people. • Continued to organize teacher bi-monthly
visits and staff the Kids-In-Need warehouse in Seattle where teachers from needy schools can select free
school supplies for their students. Provided mentors for school
classroom projects. • Continued to work with other social and
community agencies to help them accomplish their missions. These
activities, working individually and with other agencies, include: • Established a bicycle recycling program for
unclaimed bicycles received from the police. 100's of bikes have
been
repaired and re-distributed to people in the commmunity through the
Olympic Community Action Agency. • Repaired and refurbished used and donated
hospital equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, beds, etc.
The equipment was distributed at no charge to members of the community
through various agencies. • Gifts-In-Kind • Provided Christmas gifts (each year)
for
the children and parents in Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse programs
in Kitsap, Jefferson and Clallam Counties. • We issued a monthly newletter which reviewed
past activities and upcoming events. Distribution was by email, web
posting and US postal, if required. • Held Leadership Team meetings on the second
Monday of each month at 9:00 at The Bay Club in Port Ludlow. The
Leadership team constists of officers and program coordinators,
however, anyone is welcome to attend the meeting. • Held quarterly social gatherings to provide an opportunity for members to meet one another and to recognize outstanding volunteers. OLYMPIC
