STATISTICS

Statistics is the study of gathering, organizing, interpreting, and using data. Students in Grade Five study statistics to find the average or mean of a set of numbers, to interpret graphs, to organize information from tables and charts, and to solve problems involving graphing. The data is the collection of facts that have not yet been processed into information. In a list of data, the mode is the number or item that occurs the most, or the number or item that appears most frequently. There may be one mode, more than one mode, or no mode. The range is the difference between the greater number and the least number in a set of data.

The median is the midpoint, middle or center in a set of numbers in the data, after the numbers have been arranged in order. The mean or average in a set of numbers in the data is the total or sum of that set of numbers divided by the number of membersor items of the set. Averages or means are used in sports, in advertising, and in grades for Grade Five students.

Practice pages are provided to give students ample opportunities to solve situations that deal with statistics.
