Dariush Mehrjui continues his exploration of gender relations in Iran with this 1997 film about a childless couple contemplating polygyny. The wife is infertile, and her mother-in-law pressures her to permit her husband a second wife; she agrees, and this time the husband turns out to be the enlightened party, protesting that their love is enough for him. The mother turns up some prospective brides, leading to some lightly comic scenes, but the story ends in disaster. The film's rich color and sumptuous imagery capture the world of Iran's upper middle class, contrasting ironically with the characters, who refuse to settle for what they have.Who: Dr. Karimi Hakkak, professor of Washington State University in Seattle.
