Remarkable series of old pictures, dating back to 1955, depicting the Village of Mater,
nowadays belonging to the City of Oudenaarde (Belgium).

On the left side, a neo-Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Amelberga, patron saint of Mater, can be seen. The chapel was built in 1915-16 in accordance with a plan made by A. Van Ommeslaeghe, an architect from Oudenaarde. On the same place, there used to be a Romanesque style church, but this building was demolished in 1806 during the period of Napoleon's reign. In 1955, one could encounter a local farmer bringing a wooden faeces and dung barrel to the fields for manuring. Oxes or a horse were used to pull the farmer's carriage.

The Tissenhove Mill, a stake wind mill in Mater, in 1955. This wind mill is still existing. The wooden structure can be turned around to catch as much wind as possible, thanks to the stake on which it is built. For more pictures and information, go to www.mater.be
