EIRIN'S FAVOURITE MOVIES

IF YOU WANT TO CRY:
Personally, I like movies that make me cry (or I just cry real easily.) Here are some good choices:

Il Postino:
The 1994 film featuring Massimo Troisi as the postman and Philippe Noiret as the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. The movie is sad, romantic and simply beautiful. It also includes some of Neruda's excellent poems. Troisi is perfect as Mario, the young man whose life changes when Pablo Neruda is forced into exile on a small island of the coast of Italy. And if the movie wasn't enough, it sure makes you cry when you realize that Massimo Troisi died only twelve hours after finishing the film. He postponed his heartsurgery to do the film. Not a good idea...

La Vita E Bella (Life is Beautiful):
Another Italian movie that will definitely make you shed a tear or two. Roberto Benigni stars as the Jewish-Italian writer who is sent to a concentration camp with his family. Without revealing to much, the movie has a wonderful way of mixing tragedy and comedy. Ultimately, it is a movie about love, and about seeing the good things in life.

Dead Poet's Society:
I'm a a big Robin Williams fan, and this is definitely his best movie in my opinion. I remember seing it three or four times when it first came out, and I just liked it more and more each time. I guess I was struck by how passionate this teacher was about everything he did, and I was also fascinated by the life at this prepschool. Not exactly your average Norwegian high school... I also loved the performances of the students, especially Robert Sean Leonard.. My favourite scene is of course the wonderful "O Captain, My Captain"-scene.
