INCENSE

Incense has been used by religions around the world for thousands of years. Today, it is still an essential part of many religious ceremonies in the Far East. In the West, incense has become a popular aromatic for homes, dormitories, shops and other places

Incense has been in use for thousands of years. It was mentioned in the Vedas, the most sacred and oldest books of the Hindu religions, as well as on tablets placed on the Sphinx in ancient Egypt around 1530 BC. The ancient Greeks, Arabs, Romans and Hebrews are all known to have used incense. Today, incense is still in use everywhere.
Incense has always had a remarkable ability to completely transform any atmosphere to one of spirituality so it is no surprise that it has been used from the beginning as a key part of religious ceremony. That said, incense was most likely also used, particularly by the wealthy, to clear the stink of the poor sanitation of the time.
Aside from its part in most of the world's religions, incense has also been put to some creative uses over the centuries. During China's Tang dynasty the incense clock was simply a long stick of incense with the hours marked along the stick. By observing how far the incense had burnt, the time could be told quite accurately. Over the years, the Chinese developed increasingly sophisticated and accurate incense clocks designed to burn exactly 24 hours.
In these modern times of chemical aromatics and artificial everything, incense is still produced from classic ingredients: frankincense, styrax, benzoin and cascarilla bark. Most incense is sold in the form of sticks which burn for around an hour. Sticks are used everywhere from offerings to Buddha in Thailand to adding an exotic oriental feel to suburban homes in the USA. In China, massive sticks are designed to burn for days and are popular during long religious festivals. Also popular are cones, which are shorter and fatter and more suited to areas where space is limited. Coils, which are designed to hang from above, typically burn for many hours and are popular in China, Taiwan and Southern Vietnam.
Over the past decade, incense has become increasingly popular throughout America and Europe, and can now be found in all kinds of shops from exotic boutiques to discount department stores and users range from teenagers to pensioners.
Clearly, people in the West have once again discovered the magical effects of a simple stick of incense.
