The Ancient Egyptian Creation Mythos

THOTH: "I speak to you from the Great Oneness, ATUM. I am he who came into Being from the Great NUON (the Abyss). I was alone, none existed with me for I was, am, and will be all of Existence. The Spirit moved, and out of the abyss NUON, there came the first THOUGHT (air), URGE (fire), and FEELINGS (water). There was nothing before me, behind me, above me and below me. The urge inspired the feelings. The thought produced the action, and that first action was existence."

The Atum

Now existence divided, and the levels of TAUT came into being. "Behold I am ATUM, the whole of the beautiful face of God. RA is my perfect eyes, for he can see in the light and darkness of all men’s souls. But to see is different than to understand." THOTH became my mouth and the mouth gives the Mind understanding of both the Eyes and Heart.

Thoth, the Mouth of God

Now, in order to create some "thing" for both the eyes and mind to ponder, PTAH became my hand. The hand created. The hand covered both the eyes and mouth and out I spat SHU (space) and TEFNUT (movement).

The Tao of Balance

The Universe

Now there was Space, and in that Space was Movement, and out of that Movement came a union of Love, and there came into existence NUIT (the sky goddess) and GEB (the earth, her lover). My heart felt both joy and sorrow. My eyes began to cry and as they did my hand covered my eyes , but out came a dark tear, and out of that tear came the great serpent, APEP. Now creation was complete.

"Behold", said RA, "I will send TEFNUT to anoint NUIT with the sacred luminous libation, and RA commanded all manner of stars and cosmic dust to clothe her."

Nuit arches over her lover Geb (the Earth) as the Sky Goddess.

"Behold", said Ra, "I will send SHU to breath upon GEB, and he will have air that is sweet and blue, and I will kiss him and all manner of vegetation will clothe him." Now the hands (PTAH) pushed together GEB and NUIT, and from this union came forth all manner of living things.

During this union the great serpent APEP entered into many of the living beings and told them, "Perhaps RA was not so vigilant, and what of it if he saw them do things that he would not approve of; he was not the all-powerful and the night was just as beautiful as the day..."

Hathor

The creatures did as APEP said, and they married whatever they desired, and the offspring were of hideous proportions. They built great domes to hide from RA, and at night would perform blasphemous acts to RA. They came to rule over all of GEB, and even tried to conquer NUIT, but in all they did, they were not in MAAT (representing balance and harmony, the wife of Thoth).

Weighing of the Heart

RA’s anger grew till he plucked his eye of Beauty and Destruction, SEKHMET. RA said to the hands, Ptah, "Hold the serpent while he views my powers."

The horror and cries of death and shrieks from both GEB and NUIT made the hands flinch, and they lost the grip on the serpent forever. APEP was never to be bound again.

"Behold", said APEP to THOTH, "RA’s destruction will end existence and is that a measure of MAAT ?" Pain was felt and the EYES teared, and the hands covered the EYES. THOTH made a brew that would drunken and pacify the fury of RA. And while the hands covered the eyes of God, THOTH spoke the words of power and the year was completed by adding five and one-quarter days.

Geb, the Earth

In that interim, THOTH allowed GEB and NUIT to make love. There in the night, GEB and NUIT made passionate love, and when RA arrived the next day, he saw the child of GEB and NUIT, OSIRIS. RA saw this child, and blessed him, pronouncing the first day of the new year. RA then commanded new life to be made so that this child would rule over it as king. During this time, the 5 Epagomenal Neters were created, namely Osiris and Isis; their dark counterparts Set and Nephthys (who are brothers and sisters, respectively), and Apophis, the great serpent.
