What's New?

The Ninth Anthology

The ninth edition of the society's anthology of Maltese prose and poetry authored by its members was published under the title "SPIRALI" (Spirals). Representatives of the Society presented copies of "SPIRALI" to the President of the Republic and to the Prime Minister. The photo shows the President of the Society, Mr Joseph Sciberras, presenting a copy of SPIRALI to H.E. The President of Malta while Mr Sergio Grech, secretary, looks on.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

On the 22nd January 1999, a delegation from the G]aqda Letterarja Maltija led by the President Mr Joseph Sciberras (first from left) and composed of Jane Micallef, Sergio Grech and George Falzon (in photo from right), had a very cordial meeting at the Auberge de Castille with the Honourable Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, Prime Minister of Malta. The prime Minister was presented with a set of anthologies that were published by the Society. During the meeting the Society once again requested exemption from income tax (which it is now paying at 35%) and asked for help from the Government in its efforts to find a decent office as its headquarters. The Society pledged to the Prime Minister its full cooperation for all the Government's initiatives in favour of the Maltese language and our culture.

Another Anthology : “Mal-Mewga taz-Zmien”

Representatives from the G]aqda Letterarja Maltija visited the Hon. Prime Minister at Castille and presented him with a copy of “Mal-Mewga taz-Zmien” (With the Wave of Time). In the photo from left: Joseph Sciberras, Miriam Cassar, Ivan DeBattista, George Falzon, Simone Inguanez, Lina Brockdorff and Prime Minister Fenech Adami.

A copy of “Mal-Mewga taz-Zmien” was also presented to H.E. Prof. Guido Demarco, President of Malta, at the Palace, Valletta. In the photo from left: Ivan Debattista, George Falzon, Sergio Grech, H.E. the President of Malta and Mary Anne Zammit.

Press Release – 19th May 2002

The G]aqda Letterarja Maltija (Maltese Literary Society) acknowledges with pleasure the news of the European Union’s decision to recognise Maltese as one of its official languages on Malta’s eventual accession in the EU.  This was the strongest proof that our language is very much respected in international fora.  During its fifty years of existence, the G]aqda Letterarja Maltija never faultered in this belief.  That which was once considered as “the language of the kitchen” today found its place together with and equal to the languages that are spoken by millions.  This is a great historical decision for the Maltese people.  Today the Maltese language is an official EU language.  For this, the G]aqda Letterarja Maltija joins the other bodies and individuals to congratulate the Government and the people of Malta.

"Mill-Gnejna Maltija"

The Society is broadcasting its weekly "MILL-GNEJNA MALTIJA" on FM Bronja (91.7 VHF/FM) every Sunday at 1445 hours with a repetition on Tuesday at 2130 hours.
