FORMAT: There are two parts to this course:

1) There are audio tapes of course lectures by Professor William C. Williams. The general focus for these lectures is a wide range view of literature for children, the "big picture" so to speak. You are required to listen carefully to these lectures several times, devoting at least as much time and attention listening to and reviewing them as you would a classroom lecture. In order to pass this course, you are required to write essays presenting your thoughts and impressions of these lectures. Specific information about these essays is given below.

2) In order to pass this course you are also required to extensively examine your text, compiled and edited by Francelia Butler, SHARING LITERATURE WITH CHILDREN: A Thematic Anthology which is a classic text in this field. You are required to explore a number of stories and essays from this text in essay form. Specific information about this is given below.

=======================================================
MORE ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE:
1. Study and review each audio taped lecture. Part One of each of your two course assignments is to write essays twice during the semester of no less than eighty lines each expressing your questions and reflections related to these audio taped lectures. The specific nature of these essays is described below.

2. Part Two of each of your two course assignments is to write essays twice during the semester of no less than eighty lines each related to specific areas of your text, SHARING LITERATURE WITH CHILDREN: A Thematic Anthology. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT GRADES AND ASSIGNMENT REVISIONS
:

Your final grade for the course will be based solely on the grades received for Parts One and for Parts Two of each of your two assignments. Therefore, for the course there will be four letter grades used to determine your final course grade. Your assignments must be focused directly on the specific assignments, must be of at least minimum required length, must be free of careless and grammatical errors, and must be received as required. Assignments not related to the assigned topics, late and short assignments will have their grades reduced. Assignments containing more than five grammatical errors of any kind will not pass. IF I RECEIVE AN ASSIGNMENT CONTAINING MORE THAN FIVE ERRORS I WILL ONLY INDICATE AND/OR CORRECT THE FIRST FEW ERRORS. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CORRECT THE NOTED ERRORS AS WELL AS ALL OTHER ERRORS.

INFORMATION ABOUT WHEN ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE RETURNED:

If your first assignment is actually received no later than MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2002 you can expect that it will be graded and mailed to you later in the month. ASSIGNMENTS OR REVISIONS RECEIVED AFTER MARCH 11 WILL BE MAILED TO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Therefore, if it is received on time, your first essay will be returned for revision or correction if there are problems. There will not be time to revise or correct your second essay, so be sure to get everything right the first time. There will also not be time to make revisions more than once on any assignment actually first received no later than March 11, 2002. I encourage you to begin your work for this course immediately and to work steadily. If you feel you have problems with English style/usage you should purchase the book Rules of Thumb by Hughes, Silverman, Wienbroer (available in the college bookstore). Also, you should contact our Writing Center, building Y. The telephone number for the Writing Center is 1-516-572-7195. There will be no research paper or exams for this course. However, you are encouraged to supplement your studies by using the facilities available to you at Nassau Community College. In our college library we have an extensive collection of books and audiovisual materials related to literature for children. YOUR ASSIGNMENT DUE IN MARCH MAY ONLY BE REVISED IF THEY WERE GRADED LOWER THAN “C” – EXCLUDING GRADE REDUCTIONS FOR LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND/OR FOR NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ON PAGE NINE OF THIS COURSE OUTLINE. Grades lower than C are C-, D+, D, D-, F, I (Incomplete). Your assignment due in May cannot not be revised.

COURSE WITHDRAWAL

ONCE YOU RECEIVE THIS FORM YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY TAKE IT TO THE COLLEGE REGISTRAR FOR PROCESSING. If you do not formally withdraw from the course and receive the final grade of "I" (INCOMPLETE) that "I" grade cannot be changed to a "W"(WITHDRAWAL). INFORMATION ABOUT MY CONTACT TELEPHONE AND ABOUT WHEN AND HOW TELEPHONE MESSAGES WILL BE RETURNED
:

MY CONTACT TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 1-516-572-9817. Messages can be left for me at that number anytime. WHEN YOU TELEPHONE, BE SURE TO SPEAK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY, SPELL YOUR LAST NAME AND LEAVE A TELEPHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED. ALSO, BE SURE TO SPECIFY THAT YOU ARE A STUDENT IN ENGLISH 314. Leave a message that contains as much detail as possible regarding what you wish to speak with me about. If you do this, I can often respond to your questions by leaving a message on your answering machine in case it is difficult to return your call at a time when I can speak with you in person. If you do not hear from me within a reasonable time it probably means that there was a problem with either my answering machine or your answering machine or that I could not decipher your message. Therefore, if you didn't get a response to one message leave another one. Obviously, if you wish to establish contact with me via telephone it is important that you own a telephone answering machine. No e-mail will be responded to and no phone messages will be returned on Fridays, weekends, during College holidays or after the semester has ended.
TAPE RECORDS/PLAYBACK MACHINES. Some students in the past have complained that they cannot easily understand the words on one or another of the audio tapes. The tapes themselves are of “master, broadcast quality”. That means that the quality of sound is of the kind of superior quality required for radio broadcast. The tapes you receive for this course are copies of these “master, broadcast quality” tapes. If you have trouble understanding the words on some of the tapes, the problem probably lies with your tape playback equipment. If not, contact the College of the Air for replacement copies of your tape(s).

This tape mentions a "research paper" for the course. There is no research paper for the course. All of the course assignments are specified in this document. If you happen to receive a tape of a lecture mentioning a research paper, ignore that part of the lecture. All other content of the lecture remains the same as in tapes not mentioning a research paper.)

Some students have expressed uncertainty about how to approach selecting a story for one or more of the types of children noted in Part Two of the assignments. I have suggested to them that they approach the task this way. Let's use the "child in Foster Care" as an example. Suppose a person who was either a Foster Parent, knew a child in Foster Care, or a child who is in Foster Care approached you. Suppose this person gave you a book that only contained the pages you need to research in order to find a story most suitable for a child in Foster Care. Suppose this person then said to you, "Can you find a story here that you feel would be most useful for this person in Foster Care? Would you also explain to me in some detail why you believe this story is the most appropriate story for such a person?" IT IS YOUR DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE REASON WHY YOU FEEL A PARTICULAR STORY IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT SHOULD BE THE FOCUS OF PART TWO OF EACH OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.

SPECIAL IMPORTANT NOTE:
At the very beginning of this Course Outline I cautioned you that it is extremely important for you to read this information several times and very carefully before beginning any course work. If you do that you should have no trouble understanding or completing your course assignments. Careful reading of this material is particularly important because with a distance learning course you have no direct, face-to-face contact with your instructor. THEREFORE, TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS MATERIAL CAREFULLY YOU MUST ADD THE FOLLOWING TO YOUR COURSE ASSIGNMENTS. IF YOU DO NOT ADD THIS IT WILL INDICATE TO ME THAT YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS MATERIAL CAREFULLY. THEREFORE, IF YOU DO NOT ADD THIS THE GRADES ON EACH ASSIGNMENT WHERE THIS IS NOT ADDED WILL BE REDUCED BY ONE-HALF LETTER GRADE EVEN IF THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE RECEIVED ON TIME.

HERE IS WHAT TO ADD TO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS, INDICATING TO ME THAT YOU HAVE CAREFULLY READ THIS COURSE OUTLINE:

ABOVE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST PAGE OF PART ONE OF YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT WRITE THE WORD
EAGER

ABOVE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST PAGE OF PART TWO OF YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT WRITE THE WORD
HOPEFUL

ABOVE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST PAGE OF PART ONE OF YOUR SECOND ASSIGNMENT WRITE THE WORD
CURIOUS

ABOVE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST PAGE OF PART TWO OF YOUR SECOND ASSIGNMENT WRITE THE WORDS
PRECIOUS

REMEMBER THAT IF YOU DO NOT WRITE THESE WORDS ABOVE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST PAGE OF BOTH PART ONE AND PART TWO OF BOTH COURSE ASSIGNMENTS THE GRADE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE REDUCED BY ONE-HALF LETTER GRADE EVEN IF YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS RECEIVED ON TIME. THIS CONCLUDES THE COURSE OUTLINE.
