R.E.M.
For those of you who were introduced to R.E.M. with the songs that received airplay, check out their earlier work. You will not be disappointed, I promise.
And for those who think they haven't put out a decent record since "Fables," give the newer stuff a chance. It grows on you.

The guys from Athens have always given us great music- but to me, what is equally important is that their politics are in the right place. (or should that be "in the left place?")
They were instrumental in the foundation of "Rock The Vote," support Greenpeace, Amnesty International, The Nature Conservancy and others groups working for human rights and the environment.

Toad the Wet Sprocket
They may be ignored by the media and absent from corporate radio playlists, but Toad is as good as it gets.
Intriguing lyrics, stunning music and gut-grabbing vocals.
Toad often plays benefits for women's rights, pro-choice rallies, and other worthy causes.

James Taylor
Though best known for his oldies radio standards like Fire and Rain, James Taylor is one of the few artists who seems to improve with age. New Moon Shine is fantastic, and Hourglass may be his best work ever. Rolling Stone gave it five stars, their highest rating.
The song "Gaia" - which he refers to as a "basic tree hugger's anthem" - and his dedication to environmental causes lead me to believe that the man has a lovely pagan soul.

Enya
She has the loveliest voice, and (unconfirmed) rumors say she's pagan as well. Great music for meditation, or yoga.

Live
With jangling chords and driving beats, it's easy to ignore the most impressive aspect of this band: the lyrics. From major topics such as racism, war, and the outdated concept of Christianity, to seemingly minor ones like the importance of tipping- Live proves that Rock can have a message without sounding like weenie music!

Sister Hazel
According to the liner notes: "Sister Hazel was an African-American woman who ran Sister Hazel's Rescue Mission in Gainsville, Florida during the 70's and early 80's. This facility gave those who were down on their luck a safe place to stay warm, eat and regroup regardless of age, race or beliefs. It is in this spirit of unconditional concern for all beings that we have chosen to use her name."
This is happy music, by a group of nice guys.
If Live and Counting Crows had a baby, it would sound like Sister Hazel.
