Bibliographic Resources and References for the ROAN Surname:

Pat Traynor contributed the following information on the ROAN surname:

There is a ROUGHAN pedigree in "Irish Pedigrees" by O'Hart, vol.1 page 260.

It is a branch off the O'DEA pedigree: (rogha, Ir., "a choice")

Irish name was O'ROGHAIN and anglicized as Rowhan, Roan, and Roughan. There are 17 names in the pedigree. The last one was Dermod, the first to use O'Roughan as a surname. Probably in the 10th-11th century. I don't have a county of origin for them but the O'Deas came from counties Cork, Tipperary, and Clare.

My gggrandfather immigrated to the United States from Ireland during (or just prior to) the tragic Great Famine. Like most Catholic Irish poor, he made his way along the east coast laboring on public work projects as a means of raising his family. Working the railroads, he took his wife and two of their five children with him to St. Louis, Missouri in 1880. There, he and his family settled and thrived until the jarring impact of the second World War.

This summer marks 150 years since the unholy onslaught of The Great Famine which ravaged Ireland decimating her children and laying entire clans to rest for evermore.

The ROAN Clan has suffered the effects of this great castastrophe with our brothers and sisters spread all over the world from Canada to the United States and down to Australia. Hopefully, with your help, we can reconnect this family someday.
