Origins of the Bacchae

According to Greek mythology, Dionysis, the Roman Bacchus, is the god of the vine, frenzied music and dance, and the irrational. The god was represented by female worshippers known as maenads (bacchae). However, the Bacchae I refer to have their origins in the syndicated smash hit series Xena:Warrior Princess. They were introduced during the second season in the "Halloween" episode "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

"Xenalogy" depicts Bacchae as wild, soulless, vampire-like women who serve the demon-god Bacchus. These beings have only two goals: to serve their god and rip apart all men in existence. Bacchae have the ability to fly and change form, sometimes roaming their forest as wolves.

In order for a woman to become fully Bacchae, two events need to occur. First, the woman must be bitten on the neck by a Bacchae. The bite victim then gains all the ability of a Bacchae, but has not yet succumbed to the will of their god. Finally, she must partake in a ceremony in which she will drink the blood of Bacchus, thereby placing her under his spell.

The only thing that keeps these creatures from taking over the known world is the music Orpheus plays on his lyre. His song lulls the women into a trance, holding them at bay.

Legend has it that Bacchae, as well as Bacchus, can only be killed by a Dryad bone run through the heart. However, one must be Bacchae in order to slay the demon-god. Unfortunately, the very women able to complete this task are also the slaves to his will.

Last of the Bacchae

Though Bacchus is dead now, the Sisterhood of Bacchae is alive and well. I should know, for I am one of them. Though we are dispersed throughout the world and our numbers are small, the sisterhood continues to grow in size and strength. We meet and initiate in the TV Chat chat rooms. We are the guardians of the Pub.

Join the Daughters of Bacchus

In order to become Bacchae, you must be a chatter in the TV Chat chat rooms. Click on the link to register. After you've become a registered chatter, you must find a current sister and ask her to bite you. It's as simple as that. Since all the sisters are Xenites, look for us in the Xena Hardcore Nutball Chat Room and Pub. You're bound to find one of us there. The Bacchae you ask will explain to you the code of the Sisterhood as seen on this page. Once you have been initiated, email me so I can add you to the list.

The Code of the Bacchae

As a Bacchae, you must pledge your loyalty to the sisterhood by simply abiding by a few laws that govern our ways.

A member of the Bacchae royalty or a senior Bacchae sister must be present and give her permission for a bite to occur.

You must not bite someone who has not given you full permission. This person must express a genuine desire to become part of the Sisterhood.

It is your duty to explain in the best way you can what becoming a Bacchae entails to the prospective sister. If you cannot properly do so, you must direct them to someone or somewhere that can. For example, you may either direct a person to the senior Bacchae present or to this page to help with her decision.

The person MUST be FEMALE! If you are unsure of gender because of handle ambiguity or whatnot, please do not hesitate to ask a chatter his/her sex.

As the defenders of the Xena Hardcore Nutball Chat Room and Pub, if the room is threatened, a Bacchae sprouts her fangs and defends the room with all her might.

A Bacchae sister should greet another of the clan by bearing her fangs.

Bacchae sisters caught engaging in acts unbecoming a Bacchae will be punished accordingly. This includes lying to a fellow clanswoman for malicious purpose, trying to be bitten under an assumed handle when you are already Bacchae, and threatening/harassing another sister. All other offenses will be defined at the discretion of the queen. Punishment will most likely be banishment from the clan, as is the case with the previous offenses mentioned. Other punishments may be handed down depending on the severity of the crime.
