What languages were the papyri in? Was it the Sahidic Coptic of the Gospel of Thomas or was it in Greek? I need to get a good commentary on the philology of the Greek. I have Thayer's Greek-Eng ish New Testament Dictionary which is cross-referenced to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance numbers. However, all that is 'old hat'. What I'm interested in is the 'etymology' of the gospel parts. What are the internal divisions (besides the last part of Cha ter 16 everyone knows about?). Everyone tries to group the Synoptic Gospels together but they might have common sayings through Scroll Q but were written at different decades of the first century AD for different audiences. Luke was for the Hellenized Gre ks, John was for the 'Gnosticized Stoic Learned men' Matthew for the Hebrew Christians (thus emphasis on lineage) but Mark is to a different crowd entirely. One where he has to list the names of the disciples and give meanings of Hebrew proper names such s Talitha. Who did you study when you began to read Mark? What I'm interested in is the "history of the usage" of the phrases used in Mark. Before 68 AD they were not called "Christians". Some say they were called "Followers of the Word" or "Keepers of th Way": I call this my "The Word and the Way" studies. I understand your website is geared to the average inquirer not the scholar. I'm no fan of hermenuetics but I do enjoy learning all the angles. It may be what I ask you, you have no background in. Don' worry, hardly anyone else does either. |

I'm sure it was there before, but even during my years at OBI, I did not hunger after the Word like I should have given the place He granted me in His min stry. Now I'm trying to make up for the years the locusts have eaten and not let my faithfulness fluctuate with my feelings. I think of and pray for OBI's work often as God brings it to mind, and I count it a privilege to have sat under your skillful ha dling of His Message so often. I'm in a Men's Bible Study every Monday am, and we are currently going through the gospel of Mark. It has some great links and very useful info. Ray Stedman spoke at our Men's Retreat last spring - saw his piece on Mk 10:17 and it was li e seeing an old friend. Also, John Piper has preached at IPC and I saw one by him, too. I'm very intrigued by the sermon I listened to; how did you do that? Technically, I mean. If its complicated, just direct me somewhere. Just returned from China last week, where I'm on an Int'l Board that oversees two orphanages, and a bunch of foreign English teachers. Its just a coincidence, but all our staff and caregivers are Christians, and we are making inroads with many locals - e en the local party secretary now has a Bible on his desk ("very interesting reading"). Here's a Christmas story for you: Nathan (one of our teachers) was walking home from a busy day teaching English this last December, and praying as he walked, "Lord, I don't need one more thing in my life, I'm just too busy with everything that's going on." It was subfreezing, but as he p ssed one of the local trashpiles, the Lord told him, "Stop!" He did. He was told to go over to the trash heap. He did. "Now what?", he thought. "Look through the trash." He did. There he found a newborn baby girl, wrapped in old cloths, motionless f om the cold, with a note attached that said, "Please take care of this baby". He rushed her home, warmed her up, called the orphanage, and took her over. She is now 3 months old, and he visits her every Saturday. When I asked him what would have happen d if he had not listened to God, he said, "There are other Christians living in the area. He would have asked one of them. He wanted that child to live". Now Michael, I believe in the sovereignty of God, but would you have heard Him? Its a question I a k myself, but Nathan considered it a not too uncommon interruption of his life.
